EASTLAKE – later named KINGSTON
Eastlake was later renamed Kingston. The first permanent cottages erected in the area were opposite the Power House (1921-1922) and were usually referred to as The Power House Cottages. Around the same time ex-Molonglo cottages were moved to a site just below St Mark’s Cross on Rottenberry Hill. These were known as Eastlake Tenements. They replaced the Swagger Camp built erected in 1914 near the Power House. Also opposite the Power House was the Engineers Mess. One building was moved in 1926 to a site near the Railway Station where it was converted into the Friendly Societies Hall. This building was moved in the early 1960s to Hovea Street O’Connor where it serves the 13th Scout Troop as their hall. Behind the Power House there were four cottages.
EASTLAKE TENEMENTS. These few cottages were ex-Molonglo ones moved to the site below St Mark's Cross on Rottenbury Hill near Kings Avenue Bridge.

The first land sales were held in Canberra on Capitol Hill on 12th December, 1924. My parents (Brackenreg) spoke of very little else...My mother was very anxious to obtain a residential site at Red Hill...My mother picked the block on which No 8 Wickham Crescent now stands but my father got carried away at the auction and instead bid for six residential blocks in Wentworth Avenue Eastlake for her. She was furious! They entered into an agreement with John Deans, an early builder, who built the houses for them and sold them as they were built for about twelve hundred pounds each. Dr Clyde Finlay bought the first, AE Wright the third and WG Woodger of Woodger and Calthorpe also bought one. These were the first private enterprise residences built in Canberra...Ruth Robinson Yabbies at Acton, A Story of Canberra 1913-1927.
