Genseek Genealogy is a website devoted to locating and promoting
articles and information in relation to genealogy and history.
Genseek was created with the intent to bring to the attention of
genealogist and historians, the extensive scope of records available
for use in tracing family history and recording local history.
The nature of the availability of these records was not readily
available before the advent of the internet. There are a multitude
of Jenny's databases available on the site, and they are accompanied
by useful links to further sources.
Jenny has been collating information on colonial discovery and
settlement of Tower hill for over ten years, and is currently
occupied writing a history of that region which will rewrite
local history. Her work will also be accompanied by a biographical
dictionary of the pioneer families and the european discovery of
Port Fairy, includind the previously unrecorded ten years of initial
settlement at that place.
If your family was resident in the Tower Hill region Jenny would be
happy to hear from you. The following is an extract from the
her forthcoming publication 'Pioneer Speak'
The white settlement of Port Fairy and Tower Hill provides a
fascinating example of colonial settlement of Victoria. The
history of the arrival of europeans to both places is inextricably
linked with the settlements at Portland Bay and Melbourne,at a time
when these places were in their infancy, and all were little more
than suburbs of Launceston.
Pioneer Speake is a record of the settlement of Tower Hill and it
is essential that the discovery of nearby Port Fairy be included
as both were settled by those pioneers who first establised a
whaling station at the latter place. The history of settlement
at these places, along with Melbourne and Portland, is usually
attributed to emigrant squatters and merchants who arrived in the
1830's but nearly all ports of Victoria were visited by seafarers
well before formal settlement, and it was often these men who
brought to the attention of investors the nature of the region
surrounding the bays and coves they had visited.
Pioneer Speake is the story of the european settlement of the Tower
Hill region, and in particular, the Farnham Survey and surrounds.
It is the result of over ten years self funded research by the author
into the history of the region, and many of the issues and accounts
raised in the volume can justly be entitled to further research and
publication. Enhanced by private journals, and personal letters and
aided by official government records and contemporary newspaper
reports, it reveals the story of a region rich in historical content,
and is written to honour those pioneering women, children and men who
turned to this region for their livelihoods and homes.
