Index of Ship's Captains
from "Log of Logs"

The following is a list of captains (or commanders) mentioned in the Australian produced publications - "Log of Logs".

Log of Logs was painstakingly compiled by the widely respected (late) Commodore Ian Nicholson (RAN). The three volumes contain a catalogue of Logs, Journals, Shipboard Diaries, Letters and all Forms of Voyage Narratives 1788 - 1993, for Australia, New Zealand and surrounding oceans (and does also include vessels travelling world-wide, so international masters of vessels are recorded,as well as whaling vessels,survey vessels,ships of exploration etc.).
Mr Nicholson published his first volume,Log of Logs 1, with the assistance of The Australian Association for Maritime History through Roebuck Society Publications (No 41- Sunstrip Printers),his second volume self published through Roebuck Publications (no 47 - Sunstrip Printers of Queensland) and third volume in 1999 ,again,self-published through Roebuck Society Publications (no 52.Sunstrip Printers of Qld) .

Whilst the three volumes consist of an alphabetical index of vessels, there is no index to the seamen mentioned in the book.

The following index is ONLY for commanders/captains,mentioned in the first volume (Vols 2 & 3 will also be indexed, but seperately) and I have not included general names of passengers etc.

The concept of the index is to facilitate easy identification of the vessels that a known ancestor served aboard. Many of the major and local Australian libraries will have copies of Log of Logs, as do many genealogy and history societies...this index provided by Jenny Fawcett is not accompanied by a Look-up service.So unless under exceptional circumstance (due to Jenny's heavy workload) please do not request a look-up from her.If you live in a remote area (yes..North Pole or remote country areas do qualify) then you are welcome to make a request.
