1855. Portland Bay District

The following list was published in a newspaper
and being a news report there is likely to be errors, which may include
spelling of Station names. It is intended as a guide only and it is
recommended that information is verified by official contemporary
sources. The following Stock Assessment Roll was one of those available for the year 1855, which was compiled under the auspices of the Crown Lands Department and enabled by the 5th Clause of the Assessment Act. This list, being the Portland Bay District, gives the amount of horses, cattle and sheep each squatter claimed to run on his lease, and also the fee due by him to the Crown Lands Department. The following is a list of the names of the squatters and the names of their 'stations" (land leased from the Government) and includes many of the early Western District squatting stations. Those wanting more details in regard to the amount of cattle and the fee payable can email Jenny Fawcett for further information. The original copy is at times difficult to interpret, so a question mark denotes a query of spelling. weawda6355
