Loxton

Loxton, one of the key towns in the South Australian Riverland, lies on the southern banks of the Murray River and on the B55, 20km south of Berri. The town was settled in the late 1890's when much of the surrounding mallee scrub was cleared for farming with the support of extensive irrigation from the Murray River. The town grew significantly after WW2 with land being released in the area for returning servicemen and today has become the focal point for the southern Riverland and the shopping & commercial centre for the extensive mallee regions to the south. The town itself is very well presented with tree lined avenues throughout, is known for its well kept gardens, has a great shopping precinct on East Terrace and several foreshore parks. Also in town is the Loxton Historic Village which is a popular tourist attraction with several re-created buildings dating back to the early 1900's.
