Waikerie, a medium sized town is located on the Sturt Highway, adjacent to the Murray River and forms the western part of South Australia's Riverland. The town was formed in the late 1800's when settlers utlised extensive irrigation from the Murray River to turn the once dry, mallee scrub into productive farmland. The region is now dubbed the Citrus Centre of Australia due largely to the high amount of citrus groves in the area as well as being home to two large fruit juice factories. In addition, the town is also fairly isolated thus its provides the necessary services the surrounding region. The town centre is well kept, green and busy - being set on the top part of the cliffs forming the banks of the Murray River gives some good vantage points. The Lions riverfront park set adjacent to the Murray River is also highly recommended.
