The Zita Mary Oncology Unit at Calvary Hospital, Bruce, is a day-unit used by cancer patients and others who are undergoing chemotherapy treatment. It is in a convenient location for patients who live on the North and Belconnen areas of Canberra and the newly developing suburbs in Gungahlin, as well as those located in adjoining NSW towns.
Why is it called the Zita Mary Clinic?

In the Clinic waiting room there is a photo of Sister
Zita Mary and accompanying text which explains that
Sister Zita Mary was the Provincial Superior of the
Little Company of Mary Order of nuns which run Calvary
Health Care. She had a special affinity with oncology
patients and passed away in 2001. The photo (left) shows
her signing the agreement inaugurating the Hospital
with the then Commonwealth Government Minister Senator
Sir Kenneth Anderson on the right and Dr John Connors on
the left.
Dr Connors is well know to many Canberra residents as a surgeon. In his pre-Ministerial days Senator Anderson was once chairman of a Sydney Hospital board. |
