Kamen (masked) Riders are "kaizo ningen" (reconstructed humans or cyborgs) who take on some form of insect characteristics. They battle evil kaizo ningen. As result of a plane crash a Japanese, male infant is lost in the Amazon jungle. The boy survives and years later, boards a ship heading for Japan. There the young man who calls himself Amazon is befriended by a young boy, Masahiko Omamura. When the boy is attacked by a man sized spider Amazon transforms into Kamen Rider Amazon and drives the mutant off. He is the only Kamen not to be based on an insect.
