This
building is on a very small site in the central business district of Melbourne.
Its main facade faced West. The heat reflecting glass reduced heat load
from the western sun.
The pre-stressed concrete beams projecting into the forecourt
were designed to reduce the effect of the bare height of the wall relative
to the people approaching the entrance; to provide a human scale rather
than an overpowering facade.
The face of the building was finished with specially designed
ceramic mosaic tiles for low maintenance. The articulated units allowed
for differential movement of the concrete structure and the ceramic finish
in both the vertical and horizontal direction.
Every building
is different because every site and every client are.
The aesthetic
solution of the physical requirements is automatically expected from an
architect.
