photo-textual exhibition capturing the stories of Hungarians who came to Victoria as political
refugees following the 1956 Hungarian uprising.

‘Eastern Europe, the Kremlin and 1956’
Leslie
Holmes is Professor of Political Science at the University of Melbourne.
His research and writing has focused on Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union since 1945. During 2000-5 he was President
of the International Council for Central and East European Studies. At present
he is the President of the Australasian Association for Communist & Postcommunist Studies.

1956 Revolution: Why Hungary? The events of
October-November 1956’
Sandor Szakaly teaches 20th Century Hungarian
history at the Semmelweis
University in Budapest. In 2000-1 he was Director of the
Military History Institute and Museum
of Hungary, and between
2001 and 2004 was Head of Arts programming at Duna
Television. He is on the executive of the Hungarian Institute of History, as
well as being member of the Habsburg Era Research Foundation and the Editorial
Board of the New Hungarian Review

‘The Hungarian
Revolution and the West’
Robert Horvath teaches in the Department of History at
the University of
Melbourne. He conducts a
course on ‘The Modern History of East-Central Europe’. His main
research interest has been the rise of the dissident movement and its role in
the collapse of communism and Russia’s
transition to democracy. At present he is writing a book titled,
‘Dissident Legacies: human rights and radical nationalism in Russia’s
transition to democracy’.

‘Australia and its Reception of Hungarian
Refugees’
Rodger Hein is Honorary Research Fellow in the
Department of History at Monash University in Melbourne.
He pioneered research into the special characteristics and problems of the
Hungarian refugees who arrived in Australia after the 1956
Revolution. He has broadcast and lectured on this and related
topics. Rodger Hein is also an accredited interpreter and translator.
