Scope / Limitations
The information provided on this sheet is suitable for buildings built within the following parameters.
- A basic square, rectangular or "L" shaped building in a plan or combination of these.
- Single story buildings with a maximum eves height of 2700mm.
- Maximum width of building including roofed
verandas but excluding eaves of 16000mm.
- Maximum building length not greater than 5 times the building width.
- Trussed roof construction with a maximum roof pitch of 35 degrees.
- A maximum spacing of 8000mm between bracing or support walls (at right angles to the wall).
- Non-Cyclonic permissible stress design gust wind velocity of 33m/s or 41m/s classified in accordance with AS 4055.
- Walls supported on footings designed and constructed in accordance with AS 2870 - Residential slabs and footings - Construction.
- For constructions subject to snow and/or earthquake loads as specified in AS 1170.3 and AS 1170.4, for other wind velocities or for any other
variations from the above parameters, a registered professional structural engineer should be consulted.
Design Criteria
Lintel Reinforcement tables are based on the following Australian Standards.
- AS 1170.1 - Dead and live loads
- AS 1170.2 - Wind loads
- AS 3600 - Concrete structures code
- AS 3700 - SAA masonry code
- AS 4055 - Wind loads for housing

External pressure coefficient: walls-Cpe=+0.7 Roof - Cpe=-0.9 or +0.4
Internal pressure coefficient:
Cpi = -0.3 or +0.2
(As appropriate for a closed building containing minor openings in the walls)
Design wind load: 1.10 kPa (permissible), 1.65 kPa (ultimate)

Bond Beam Lintels
- The following tables show requirements for lintels supporting standard trusses for the design criteria and limitations given above. For lintels supporting girder trusses, concentrated loads or alternatives outside those shown, consult a registered professional structural engineer.
- Concrete blocks shall have a characteristic compressive strength of 10 MPa and grout or concrete for core filling a characteristic compressive strength of 20 MPa.
- Lintel Reinforcement shall extend 600mm beyond clear opening and lap 600mm with perimeter bond beam
reinforcement.
Construction Details
- Place 20mm of concrete into bottom of bond beam blocks.
- Place bottom steel reinforcing bar.
- Place concrete and leave adequate clearance for bar diameter and 25mm cover from top of bond beam blocks.
- Place top steel reinforcing bar.
- Place concrete to top of bond beam blocks.

Lintel Reinforcement Tables
Please choose a table depending on your roof construction type, and wind classification.
Rural areas - No wind shielding
Wind classification - N3(W41N)
Built-up Residential areas - Partial shielding
Wind Classification - N2(W33N)
