AIMS FOR FAMILY HISTORY SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP
Last year was a learning year for the Bribie Island Seniors Computer Club, especially the Family History Special Interest Group. We had no idea on how things should run and for the limited amount of experience between us we had, had some wonderful successes stories and a really good Special Interest Club was formed This year I have been given the opportunity to be Co-ordinater of this group and would like to submit the following to members which I feel will give the group some point to strive to. The stages of the Special Interest Class would be firstly to purchase CD from BISCC and attend our meetings on the 2nd Thursday of the month at the Anzac Room. Upon attending you would be entitled to a home visit to install the PAF Programme/or Family Tree Maker (Family Tree Maker is a programme you may purchase individually, PAF is free software from LDS Church on the BISCC CD} a follow up visit would check your progress and correct any errors that may have occurred. Information would be given at meetings regarding queries, researching on the net,and where to go for research. Question time is especially good for learning. A couple of members each week will discuss something they have found to be particularly interesting alternatively guest speakers can be arranged if we feel it would be beneficial to the group. The writer at this time would send email web sites and interesting pieces of mailing lists to members on line. Members whom are not on line would receive print outs of this correspondence at the following meeting. Members on the inter-net would be requested to print out one copy each and bring it along to the next meeting to save costs to the writer. Once your information is loaded into the programmes we would progress onto printing out various lists and starting to arrange our information into a readable record. Some of this information you will learn from the meetings, some will be learnt by one to one help from other members. Small workshops will be held showing how to research mailing lists, archives, and surname lists on the internet. When you attend these workshops we would hope that you could show at least one other person what you had learnt. Once all the above stages have been done and at least your direct descendants and possible five generations in your family history programme you will be shown how to put your Gedcom file on the internet. All of the above can only be achieved by help by other members, due to the influx of new people at each meeting, and the amount of time you are willings to give to family history. Five generations sound a lot and we can be flexible but it you use your grandchildren, children, yourselves, parents, and grandparents, that is five generations. When you submit the file living family members are just shown as e.g. Smith Living so there is no danger of anyone picking up on whom your living relatives are. Please let me know if you feel any more could be added to this schedule, or if you feel I have left out special areas. Some of our members will be going to the U3A LDS class, others are members of Caboolture Family History Group. All knowledge learnt can be passed on at our meetings. We may be able to arrange small groups to visit these facilities, also the State Library. Lets all try and break down a Brick Wall this year
