The Individualised Cueing System (ICS) aims to fulfil a number of learning and organisational objectives for visual thinking people. The majority of children with ASD are visual learners. With the motto " If I can see it, feel it then I can understand it".
Why visual learning, because it :
Gives a reason and means to communicate It is easily understood Enhances learning and understanding Reduce anxiety and behaviour and is a tool for life.
The ICS is a pictorial way of showing what is required by the visual learner. It also reassures those who may be confused, or worried or become stressed about the sequence, order of events, or the amount that needs to be done. The ICS is a dynamic system enabling both the teacher/teacher aide and visual learner to
Communicate in a non-verbal way Reinforce verbal instructions Create better understanding Reduce frustrations in all participants in the communication process
The benefits of the ICS are to
Create understanding to promote learning; To provide information; To self regulation of emotions and behaviour; To enhance expression of needs and wants; To increase tolerance to change; And it gives a reason and means to communicate; and to be able to interact verbally.
This ICS fosters a sense of organisation, aids the visual learner to become familiar with learning their daily routine. This enables time management skills to be learnt .A consequence of this is that time management skills are taught and learnt and time is saved.
The ICS is a concrete pictorial of what is required by the visual learner. It also reassures those who may be confused, or worried or become stressed about the sequence, or order of things. The visual learner will already familiar with the visual component way of learning and the ICS ensures the visual learner is able to receive time management skills in a format they are able to cope with.
Clearly we are aiming for the visual learner to fulfil a better quality of life and to have a better opportunity in the school system and community where their needs are more adequately met.
