Container Deposit Legislation (CDL)
for Australia

Australia currently has Container Deposit Legislation (CDL) in only one of its eight states/territories - South Australia (SA). However, pressure continues to build (despite persistent lobbying to the contrary by the beverage and packaging industries) for other states, and Australia as a whole, to follow SA's positive and popular example. In fact, an active campaign is currently underway for the introduction of CDL in New South Wales, Australia's most populous state.

Queenlanders are campaigning against silica sandmining on North Stradbroke Island by Australian Consolidated Industries (ACI). Silica is a raw material used in the manufacture of new glass.

Part of the campaign strategy is to seek the introduction of CDL in Queensland and to bring back returnables so as to decrease the amount of raw silica required to make glass containers.
