HISTORY OF THE EARLY GASKELL FAMILY
Richard Gaskell - Born at FOXALL HALL farm in Buxton, Derbyshire and made a fortune at RINGLEY BROW, Halsham Moor as a Civil Engineer and speculating in Coal Mines. He owned property largely in that neighbourhood, also at MAPLE, Derbyshire. He was the tallest man in the county and his wife one of the least. They had 6 children at only 3 births.

Richard the eldest son, succeeded to the whole properties and drank it away, signing a good deal of it over in a drunken moment. Enlisted as a soldier and afterwards did no good. Supposed to have died in India. John Gaskell had not the ability of his father, easy-going and married early without any occupation, had to take a situation, afterwards enlisted, his wife bought him off, He settled in Bolton as a waste dealer, was on the Grand Jury for Salford Hundred and a visitor at the Salford New Bailey,( was as much as expected ).

All that is known of Richard is that he was an Officer inthe Army. He went with his regiment abroad, and his wife having her child refused to go abroad with him. She supported herself and took a farm at Ringley Brow adjoining the Gaskell's property, and kept herself indepently. She left behind her - house property at Halsham Moor which went to her daughter Elizabeth and on her death was sold and divided among her issue by JohnGaskell. (our grandfather).
