ABOUT Destroy and Scrubber.

Destroy and Scrubber are simple utilities designed to remove all traces of sensitive files from hard or floppy disks before you pass them onto someone else.

While they are not intended to defeat the efforts of data-recovery professionals, they will make it very difficult for anyone to recover data from disks on which they have been used.

Thus, unless you have very valuable data on your disks, the cost of recovery will be much greater than the value of the data to someone else.

Destroy makes several passes over the file on which it is used, writing meaningless data over the file and, before deleting the file, renaming it to a meaningless single-letter name.

Scrubber makes several passes over the unused portions of the disk, filling them with meaningless data so that no-one will be able to undelete previously deleted files.

For maximum security it is recommended that you use Destroy to erase sensitive files and then use Scrubber to clean up any residual traces of the data.

Note that the more passes you use, the more difficult it is going to be for someone else to recover your data, but for the ordinary user, one pass should be sufficient.

INSTALLATION

The Install.exe utility in this package makes installation very easy. All you have to do is to run Install and either accept the suggested folder or enter a different folder name. The files will be copied to the correct locations.

If you have received this package as a "ZIP" file, you will probably already have "unzipped" the installation files or be reading this file in "Winzip" or a similar utility. If you are using Winzip, simply click on the Winzip Install button and the installation utility will start.

If you have received the package on disk or have already unzipped the files, locate the folder (directory) which holds the files and run Install.

You can run Install as follows

  1. Click on the Start button, select "Run" and enter the command-line [your folder name]\install
eg "C:\temp\install" or "A:\install" and click on [OK].

  2. The install utility will prompt you for the name of a folder to hold the HABClean files.

Use the path suggested unless you have a good reason not to (eg. you are already using a folder named C:\Clean)

You will have the option of installing shortcuts for the files.

When you click on the [OK] button, the files will be installed to the folder you have chosen.
