Program Size
HABEdit and HABPad have much larger program sizes than any of the Notepad versions

Opens multiple files
Notepad can view only one file at a time whereas HABEdit and HABPad can open several files in different windows which can be cascaded, tiled or arranged as you wish. This helps you to compare one file with another.

Toolbar
HABEdit and HABPad have a toolbar with shortcut buttons which you can click on for the most common operations.

View as Hex
HABEdit and HABPad can open non-text files (and text files) in Hex-view so that their contents can be examined in detail. HABEdit can be used as a Hex-editor.

Hex edit
In HABEdit you can Edit a file in Hex-view.

WARNING a Hex-editor is a very powerful tool and since you cannot immediately see the effect of an edit, it is a very dangerous one.

HABPad, without Hex-editing, is available for this reason.

Standard shortcuts

Windows 9X versions of Notepad use a limited number of shortcut keys:
  Crtl+Z Undo
  Ctrl+X Cut
  Ctrl+C Copy
  Ctrl+V Paste
  F3 Find next
F1 Show help (not shown in menu)
In addition to the above, Windows XP Notepad, HABEdit and HABPad use the following standard shortcut keys:
  Ctrl+O Open file (text)
  Ctrl+S Save
  Ctrl+P Print (text-view only)
  Ctrl+A Select all (text-view only)
  Ctrl+F Find
  Ctrl+R Replace (text-view only)
(XP Notepad uses Ctrl+H)

Retains last state
When you run Win 9X versions of Notepad they alway opens in the default state, in the same window size and screen position and when you use the file-open dialog, text files are the dafault.

HABPad and HABEditand Notepad XP, on the other hand, retain the last window size, position and state (maximized or normal) and font setting, folder selected and file-type. (Notepad XP does not retain file-type)

Maximum file size
This is the largest size of file that each program can open in text-view.

The Windows 9X versions of Notepad will load around 58Kb and if presented with a larger file, will offer to open it in Wordpad instead.

Notepad XP, HABPad and HABEdit each will potentially load a maximum of 2GKb into text view. HABPad and HABEdit will stop loading and display what has been loaded when the pre-set maximum is reached.

Font-Select
HABPad, HABEdit and the later versions of Notepad allow you to select a font for text-display and for printing. Note that this font is not saved with the text-file.

Whole word search
The search dialog in HABPad and HABEdit has a whole word option. Notepad’s does not.

Replace
Notepad XP, HABPad and HABEdit have a replace function.

Tag-stop spacing
In HABPad and HABEdit you can adjust the tab-stop spacing.

Cursor position indicator
Notepad XP, HABPad and HABEdit display the cursor- position in the status bar.

Read-only mode
HABPad and HABEdit initially load files in read-only mode to protect them against accidental modification. After the file is opened, you can change to edit mode.

Null to Blank conversion
If a file contains NULLs (ASCII zero characters) Notepad automatically converts the NULLs to blank spaces, without notifying you. If HABPad or HABEdit find nulls when loading files into text-view,they give you the option of converting them to blank spaces.

Adjust linebreaks
HABPad and HABEdit have an Adjust line-breaks routine which allows you to convert the line-breaks in text-files produced by Unix/Linux or Macintosh computers to the form used in Windows/MS-DOS files.

Import text
HABPad and HABEdit can import text-files produced by Unix/Linux or Macintosh computers and convert them to the format used in Windows/MS-DOS files.

Export text
HABPad and HABEdit can export the contents of the text-view window in the format required by either Unix/Linux or Macintosh computers.

Unicode text
Notepad XP supports the Unicode system for displaying international text characters. HABPad and HABEdit do not.

Page setup
Notepad has a Page setup menu option which allows you to set margins, headers, footers and page numbers for printouts. This facility is not available in HABPad or HABEdit.

Time-log documents
You can use Notepad to create Time-Log Documents. This facility is not available in HABPad or HABEdit.

HABEdit and HABPad

The only difference between HABEdit and HABPad is that in HABEdit you can edit in hex-view but in HABPad you cannot.
