HABit utilities.

What's new at HABit Software

Here are some utilities that I have written and have been using for some time.
You may find them useful.

I have found that I have been able to make Windows 3.11 quite stable by using Chores to regularly run Scandisk, Defrag and a virus scanner and by placing HABMon in my Program Manager's Startup Group.

HABExam is one of my most-used utilities. I use it nearly every day to locate information

HABEdit suits me better than Notepad and I have changed the file associations for txt, log and ini files to HABEdit.

I use HABCal whenever I need to check a date or age and HABFiles when I need to "massage" a text data-file.

Most of these utilities are written for. Windows 95, 98, ME and XP and are not suitable for the obsolete Windows 3. Old versions, suitable for Windows 3, of most of these utilities are available but may lack some of the features of the current versions. If you have Windows 95, 98, ME or XP, please download the current version by clicking on the “Download” link.

The old 16-bit versions, suitable for Windows 3, have been removed from the site but you can still obtain them by completing the form at the foot of this page.

Please note that the programs Chores and HABmon are designed specifically for MS-DOS/Windows systems and are not intended for use with Windows 9X or XP. TreeSize is designed for Windows 3X but will also run in Windows 9X and XP, however its use with these systems is unneccessary since you can get the same information by right-clicking on the folder name in File Manager and selecting Properties from the pop-up menu.

Chores

Chores is a scheduling utility that can be run from the DOS prompt or from the autoexec.bat file.
If you call it from the autoexec.bat file, you can run selected programs (e.g. Scandisk, defrag, or virus scanners) on the days you select. (e.g. every day, every second day or on specific week days).

You can set a prompt so that if you are in a hurry, you can bypass lengthy processes. If you run Chores more than once on the same day, it will not run again any item run previously that day; it will run only items you have bypassed.

I suggest that you use Chores by placing a line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT, after the initialisation section and before any menu items or calls to WINDOWS, and again as the final item. In this way, if you need to bypass an item at start-up, Chores will prompt you again to run it before you shut down.

For more details, see the Chores Readme and the Chores Ini Pages.

The same information is contained in the Readme.txt file and the Chores.ini file which also functions as the help file. To set the schedule of tasks, open chores.ini in a text editor such as HABEdit or Notepad.

Form Parser Form Parser

When designing web-page forms, a simple method of getting the input is to use the "mailto:" action for the POST method to send the form input to your email address.

You then receive the form input as an email attachment. Unfortunately, the input is URL encoded and quite difficult to read.

HABit Form Parser is a simple Windows program for decoding URL encoded text.

For more information, consult the Readme page. The same information is available in the Readme.txt file after downloading Formpars.zip.

HABCal icon HABCal

HABCal is an on-screen perpetual calendar, covering all dates in the Gregorian Calendar (the calendar used in most countries) ranging from 1 AD to 3001 AD.

In addition to a calendar's normal use for checking dates, HABCAL can be used to

  • find the date of Easter in any year,
  • calculate any time interval (age) in days and weeks, and years and months,
  • copy a selected date to the clipboard, ready to paste into a document.

HABClean

The HABClean package includes two utilities, Destroy and Scrubber, that are designed to remove all traces of sensitive files from hard or floppy disks before you pass them on to someone else.

While they are not intended to defeat the efforts of data-recovery professionals, they will make it very difficult for anyone to recover data from disks on which they have been used. Thus, unless you have very valuable data on your disks, the cost of recovery will be much greater than the value of the data to someone else.

Destroy iconDestroy

Destroy destroys files by blanking and then deleting them. When you use Destroy, you will be asked to choose the number of passes Destroy will use. If you choose more than one pass, all but the final pass overwrite the file with nonsense data. The final pass overwrites the file with null characters. Finally, Destroy renames the file to a meaningless single-letter name and then deletes it.

For quick cleanup, you can drag a file onto the Destroy shortcut (or icon).

Scrubber iconScrubber

Scrubber removes traces of files previously deleted from the disk.

When you use Scrubber, you will be asked to choose the number of passes Scrubber will use. If you choose more than one pass, all but the final pass overwrite the unused portions of the disk with nonsense data. The final pass overwrites these portions with null characters. Thus no-one will be able to undelete previously deleted files.

For maximum security it is recommended that you use Destroy to erase sensitive files and then use Scrubber to clean up any residual traces of the data.

For more information, consult the Readme page. The same information is available in the Readme.txt file after downloading habclean.zip and there is much information in the scrubber.hlp and destroy.hlp files.

HABEdit icon HABEdit

HABEdit is a file viewer and editor similar to the Notepad utility but with a number of enhanced features including:

  • Several files may be opened at the same time in different windows.
  • Non-text files (and text files) may be opened and edited in Hex-view
  • HABEdit does not "choke" on large files or switch to WordPad as do Windows 9X versions of Notepad. Instead it loads as much of the file as it can (up to a maximum of 2 Gb).
  • HABEdit has a Replace function as well as an enhanced Search function.

HABEdit uses an innovative layout for its Hex-view that makes it much easier for the user to see the relationship of text to hex,

HexView in HABEdi A file open in HABEdit's HEX view
(This is only the top-left of the Hex-view, which extends to 0F, a further 10 columns, to the right and at the bottom to the end of the file)

New release: HABExam version 3.2

This is an essential utility for the paranoid, the forgetful and the curious.

Do you know what is hidden away on your PC? Do you need to find everything you have on record about a particular person?

Run HABExam and you might be surprised. It can find scraps of information that you thought were deleted long ago.

HABExam was designed as a more flexible and faster alternative to the Windows Find utility and as a more user-friendly and forgiving replacement for the ubiquitous command-line utility, GREP.

HABFab iconHABFab

HABFab is a metric converter for workers with fabric.

HABFab was designed to assist quilters who obtain patterns from other countries.

In the U.S., quilters normally use yards for their Requirements specifications and inches for their Cutting lists, while in continental Europe, centmetres and metres are used, and in some countries, such as Australia and the U.K., either set of units may be used.

This can cause problems if you need to translate from a “foreign” system to the one you normally work with.

HABFab was designed to help make these conversions easier

For more information, consult the Readme page. The same information is available in the Readme.txt file after downloading and installing HABFab and there is more in the habfab.hlp file.

HABFiles iconHABFiles

HABfiles was previously known as HAButil.

It is often difficult to transfer data from one database or spreadsheet program to another.  Although modern operating systems have very sophisticated means of transferring data  from one application to another on the same computer, it can become much more  difficult when you receive a file from some-one else by way of the internet or diskette.

Text-files are a commonly-used lingua franca for transferring raw data in these  circumstances. However experience soon teaches us that we are quite likely to meet  problems with the use of text files.

HABFiles was designed as a simple utility to solve many of these problems, including different means of delimiting fields and incompatible date formats.

For more information, consult the Readme page. The same information is available in the Readme.txt file after downloading habutil.zip and there is more in the habfiles.hlp file.

HABMon iconHABmonHABMon window

HABmon is a utility designed to enhance Windows 3.0 and 3.1x installations.
It monitors the WINDOWS Resources and warns you when they are getting low so that you can take action before it is too late.

Onscreen it appears as a tiny toolbar-like window, 16 pixels high,  which can be positioned wherever you like.
It appears to be a simple clock (with alarm and timer), but has the resource monitor running in the background. Whenever your resources fall below 20%, a message will pop up and you will be able to close unwanted windows, or to save your data and either restart WINDOWS or reboot the computer.

The HABmon "Window" button also acts as a shutdown button (something like the Windows 95, 98 Start button). Click on it and you will be able to choose from

  • Exit Windows
  • Restart Windows
  • Reboot Computer
  • Exit HABmon (usually not a good option)

For more information, consult the Readme page. The same information is available in the Readme.txt file after downloading HABmon.zip and there is more in the HABmon.hlp file. (Right clicking on the HABmon window will reveal a popup menu in which Help is one of the items.)

HABPad iconHABPad

HABPad is a file viewer and editor similar to the Notepad utility but with a number of enhanced features including:

  • Several files may be opened at the same time in different windows.
  • Non-text files (and text files) may be opened and viewed (but not modified) in Hex-view
  • HABPad does not "choke" on large files or switch to WordPad as do Windows 9X versions of Notepad. Instead it loads as much of the file as it can (up to a maximum of 2 Gb).
  • HABPad has a Replace function as well as an enhanced Search function.

Note: HABPad is HABEdit with the Hex-view but not the Hex-edit function. It is intended for use in situations where the ability to edit any file may be too much of a temptation for inexperienced or irresponsible users.

HABPad uses an innovative layout for its Hex-view that makes it much easier for the user to see the relationship of text to hex,

HexView in HABPad A file open in HABPad's HEX view
(This is only the top-left of the Hex-view, which extends to 0F, a further 10 columns, to the right and at the bottom to the end of the file))

Although you can view files in HABPad's Hex view, you cannot modify them. If you do need Hex-editing, you should get HABEdit instead.

HABTidy iconHABit Tidy

HABit Tidy (HABTidy) is a Windows wrapper for the HTML Tidy for Windows command-line utility and allows you to clean up HTML code and correct any mistakes that you may have made.

HABit Tidy allows you to harness the full power of HTML Tidy for Windows without the need to remember complex syntax or to type in long command-lines.

Features include

  • a NOTEPAD-like code editor for viewing and editing the markup.
  • a Report page to display any error or warning messages generated by HTML Tidy for Windows.
  • quick location of coding mistakes.
  • automatic backups and easy undo function .
  • a toolbar with buttons and popup context-menus to perform most commands.
  • a full range of keyboard shortcuts.
  • you can launch your default Browser from within HABit Tidy so that you can see what your markup looks like.
  • a very simple method of setting almost all the options that HTML Tidy for Windows makes available.
  • group processing so that you can validate or clean-up and reformat a set of files in one operation.

Note: that the terms and conditions for the useage and distribution of HABit Tidy differ slightly from those of the other HABit Utilities.

For more information, consult the readme page. The information on the Readme page will also be available in the readme.txt file after you download habtidy.zip and there is more in the habtidy.hlp file.

NameCase icon - NameCase

NameCase is a simple utility for managing the case of file-names. The case (UPPER, lower or MiXed) of file and folder names has no significance to Windows/DOS operating systems but it does matter to some web-servers and to some browsers.

Windows Explorer for 9X can be misleading in the way it represents filenames in that all-uppercase (DOS-style) names are shown as proper-case. This can cause problems when constructing web-sites, since you have to be very careful about the case of filenames when setting up links. NameCase helps you to adopt a systematic approach to the case of filenames.

Another use for NameCase is when migrating to Windows XP. XP Wndows Explorer shows names in correct case and you can get an ugly mix of cases when you add files from different sources. NameCase will make it easy to tidy them up.

NameCase resembles a simplified Windows Explorer and should be very easy to use.

For more information, consult the Readme page. The same information is available in the Readme.txt file after downloading namecase.zip and there is more in the namecase.hlp file.
