Quiztime version 2 readme

Back to Educational software

Please note that this version of Quiztime is designed for the 32-bit versions of Windows prior to Windows Vista (including Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP).

It has not been tested on Windows Vista and probably will not work correctly on that operating system.

If you are using one of the obsolete 16-bit versions of Windows (such as Windows 3, Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups), you are advised to request the Windows 3X version of Quiztime.

BYPASSING EMAIL FILTERS

In recent years, many users of email have had serious problems with viruses and other malicious programs being sent as attachments to emails.

As a result. many providers of email services now routinely block any email with an attachment containing a program file, even in zip files.

But I have found that most email filters will pass a zip file containing program files which have had the .exe file extension changed to something else.

I now rename all my program files that are to be sent by email by changing the ".exe" file extension to ".dix".

But this does mean that the recipient must change the extension of each such file back to ".exe" before the program can be used.

FILES INCLUDED IN THIS PACKAGE

Readme.txt - this file
Install.dix - an installation utility (renamed).
Install.dat - data for Install.exe
Quiztime.dix - the renamed program file
Quiztime.hlp - a Windows Help file.
Quiztime.ini - configuration file for Quiztime.exe
Trial.rec - sample student file
Cities.qiz - sample quiz file
Acidbas.qiz - sample quiz file
Heat.qiz - sample quiz file

INSTALLATION

The Install.exe utility in this package makes installation very easy. All you have to do is to run Install and either accept the suggested folder or enter a different folder name. The files will be copied to the correct locations.

You can run Install as follows:

  1. Select or create a temporary folder. (C:\temp is suggested)

  2. Unzip the Quiz32.zip archive file to this folder and rename the ".DIX" files as follows:
        Quiztime.dix to Quiztime.exe
        and Install.dix to Install.exe

  3. Click on the Start button, select "Run" and enter the command-line
    [your temporary folder name]"\install"
    eg "C:\temp\install"
    and click on OK.

  4. The install utility will prompt you for the name of a folder to hold the Quiztime files.
Use the path suggested unless you have a good reason not to (eg. you are already using a folder named C:\program files\Quiztime)
You can also use the Browse button to find a suitable folder.
You will have the option of installing Start Menu shortcuts for the files.
When you click on the OK button, the files will be installed to the folder you have chosen.
