| Everyone loves a mystery. and has
scraps left over from previous quilt projects and 5" squares in
their cupboard. This mystery quilt has been designed to use up some
of those scraps.Instructions for this quilt originally appeared in
issues of the Tasmanian Quilting Guild newsletter, Island Threads,
during 1996 and 1997.
Please read all instructions before beginning. You may prefer to
use an alternative method to the one given to complete the
individual blocks.
Dimensions - 74 inches square
Requirements - based on fabrics at
least 105 cms wide.
- Approx. 2.75 metres assorted dark scraps
- Approx. 3.25 metres assorted light scraps
- Approx 25 cm assorted medium scraps (medium to large
prints)
- 40cms of a contrasting fabric
Requirements for borders are included in this fabric. Extra fabric
will be needed for binding and backing.
Part 1
Please read all instruction before beginning your blocks. You
may wish to use an alternative method to the one given to complete
the individual blocks.
Cutting

Cut 33 strips 2½" x 21" or equivalent |
| Dark Scraps |
Cut 41 strips 2½" x 21" or equivalent |
Construction
- From the 2½" dark strips cut 128 2½" squares and
reserve for part 2.

- From the 2½" light strips cut 64 x 2½" squares and
reserve for part 3.
- With the right sides together sew the remaining light and dark
2½" strips together to make strip pieced units of 2 strips
each.
- Press seam allowance towards the darker fabric.
- Cross-cut each strip pieced unit at 2½" intervals to make
2½" x 4½" rectangles. You will need 200 rectangles..
- Sew two of the resulting rectangles together to make a
four-patch unit. Make 100 four-patch units which should each
measure 4½" square.

Alternative Colour
Schemes
For those wishing to make a more colour coordinated quilt, there
are a number of alternatives.
- Use bright tone on tones instead of the dark and medium scraps
(using different colours for the darks and mediums) and replace the
light background with a dark background (eg black or navy solid or
tone on tone).
- Use only one fabric for the background
- Use several fabrics in one or two colours for the dark fabric
and several fabrics in one or two colours for the light
fabric.
