Part 6

Please read all instructions before beginning your blocks. You may wish to use an alternative method to the one given to complete the individual blocks.

Cutting

Construction

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each of 4 medium 3"squares. With right sides together place a medium square on top of one corner of a light square. Sew the 3" medium square to the 5½" light square along the diagonal drawn on the medium square. Trim leaving a ¼" allowance and press seam allowance towards medium fabric. Sew another 3" medium square to each of the three remaining corners of the 5½" light square Trim and press seam allowance towards medium fabric.


2.	Sew a unit B to opposite sides of the above unit
3.	Sew a 3" light square to each end of a unit B to form two of the following:
4.	Sew these strips to opposites sides of the unit constructed in step 2. Block A
5.	Sew the 8 unit C into 4 strips of 2.

6.	Sew a medium/dark bias square at each end of 2 of the unit C strips

7.	Sew strips from step 5 to opposing sides of Block A
8.	Sew strips from step 6 to remaining sides of block A Block B
9.	Sew remaining 12 unit B together to form 4 strips of 3
10.	Sew a 3" light square to the both ends of 2 of these strips

11.	Sew strips from step 10 to opposite sides of block B. Sew strips from step 11 to remaining 2 sides of block B

	Block C
12.	Cut each of the 2 15" light square once on the diagonal. With right sides together sew light triangle to the opposite sides of block C. Press the seam allowance towards the light triangles. With rights sides together sew light triangles to the remaining two sides of the block C. Press the seam allowance towards the light triangles.

13.	Sew 1½" x 28½" strips of contrast fabric to opposite sides of block. Sew 1½" x 30½" strips of contrast fabric to remaining to sides of block.

14.	Sew unit D together to form 4 strips of 3 and sew unit Dr together to form 4 strips of 3. Sew strip of unit D to strip of unit Dr. Sew a 3½" light/medium bias square to each end of 2 of the strips.

15.	Sew strips to centre square.
16.	Cut each of the light and dark 7¼" squares diagonally twice to yield 24 light and 24 dark ¼- square triangles. Cut each of the light and medium 3 7/8" squares diagonally once to yield 4 light and 4 medium ½-square triangles. Sew the ½ and ¼ square triangles together to form 4 strips as below.

17.	Sew a strip from step 15 to one side of quilt centre. The strip is longer than the width of block so you will need to sew only part of the seam.

18.	Stitch second strip to side adjacent to first, third strip on side adjacent to second and then the final strip. Finally finish sewing seam on first side.
19.	Sew the 2½" x 42½" dark strips to opposite sides of quilt top. Sew the 2½"

	x 46½" dark strips to the remaining two sides. Sew the 3½" x 46½" medium strips to opposite sides the quilt top and the 3½" x 52½" medium strips to the remaining 2 sides. Note: If you like applique, the dark and medium borders could be replaced with one border 5" wide on which you can applique your own design. You would need to cut 2 strips 5½" x 42½" and 2 strips 5½" x 52½" of your choice of background fabric.
20.	Sew the 1½" x 52½" strips of contrast fabric to opposite sides of the quilt top then sew the 1½" x 54½" strips of contrast fabric to the remaining 2 sides.
21.	Sew 12 of the star units together to form 2 strips of 6 units each. Sew these strips to opposites sides of the quilt top.
22.	Sew remaining 16 star units together to form 2 strips of 8 units each and sew to remaining sides of quilt top.
23.	Sew the 48 unit H together to form 4 strips of 12 units. [Note: Unit H was constructed in Part 5 of the instructions.] Sew 2 of these strips to opposite sides of the quilt top. Sew the 3½" dark/medium bias squares to both ends of 2 remaining strips. Sew strips to remaining sides of quilt top.

24.	Sew the 52 unit I together to form 4 strips of 13 units. Sew 2 of these strips to opposite sides of the quilt top. Sew 3½" light squares to both ends of 2 remaining strips. Sew strips to remaining sides of quilt top

The finished top

Binding

You will need 60 cms of light fabric for binding. Cut into 9 strips 2½" wide and join to form the binding.
The finished top is not quite large enough for a queen-sized bed. For those wanting to use the quilt on a queen-sized bed, add a 6" border of light fabric before binding.

For the border and binding you will need 2.25 metres of light fabric

Cut 2 strips 82½" long and sew to opposite sides of the quilt top
Cut 2 strips 94½" long and sew to the remaining 2 sides of the quilt top.
The quilt will then measure 94" square

Cut 10 strips 2½" wide and join to form the binding.
