John Tevelein's Saddlery

Photograph taken during the 1880s.

On his arrival in Launceston, John Tevelein went into parternership with Thomas Stubbs, a convict, free by servitude. The firm of Tevelein and Stubbs moved to these premises in the late 1830s. Following the death of Stubbs in 1853, John continued to operate the business by himself.

In 1875 he handed the business over to his two oldest sons, John and James. By 1878 James had set up in business in Elizabeth St and John was operating from the Charles St premises.

John, Jnr continued to operate a saddlery from these premises for many years. The building was sold during the depression in the 1890s and he moved his business around the corner to Patterson St.
