The Bribie Island Sportfishing Club is set to once again challenge Australia’s Flyfishers. Moreton Bay in South East Queensland is home to one of this country's greatest sportfish, the Longtail or Northern Bluefin Tuna. These fish are well renowned for their blistering speed and dogged determination. To tackle them with a flyrod is, well, a challenge!

The tuna’s habit of crashing into bait schools at the surface gives flyfishers the chance of the hook-up of a lifetime. There can be a hundred or more world record size fish in any school that is encountered, but they only stay at the surface for the minute or two that they are actually feeding. It is so frustrating to see birds wheeling and diving into the thrashing and foaming frenzy that is feeding Tuna and knowing all the time, that before you can get there, they’ll be gone.

There are lots of challenges here for the intrepid flyfisher. First of all it is necessary to position a boat where it can be predicted that the fish will come up next. When and if they do actually come within casting distance, it is then necessary to place an accurate cast, usually at range, with a well-tied fly right in front of a feeding fish. If all that comes together, it is only a matter of battling an uncontrollable leviathan for an hour or more. The angler is challenged by the method, the gear used, the weather and not least of all, by the fish.

The prizes offered for success are token. This is in recognition of the fact that all who partake of the experience return enriched.

The "Challenge" is being issued to ANSA or GFAA members who are tough enough to take it up.
