CLUB HISTORY

In 1983, a group of anglers, who were members of the Bribie Island Boating and Fishing Club decided to form a sportfishing club based on the guidelines of the Australian National Sportfishing Association.  Through the enthusiasm and hard work of John Doohan and Cliff Leigh, the Bribie Island Sportfishing Club was formed.

The Bribie Island Sportfishing Club was welcomed into the ranks, as a member club of the Australian National Sportfishing Association during the 1983 - 84 fishing year.   Both John Doohan and Cliff Leigh served on the committee of the Club for many years, and were instrumental in setting out the way in which the Club would successfully function.  Their efforts were recognised by the members of the club, when they were unanimously awarded life membership on the occasion of the celebration of the Club's 10th Anniversary in 1994.

The Bribie Island Sportfishing Club has now been established for 17 years, and now numbers in excess of 100 members.  We offer those members more than just competitions, with a heavy emphasis being placed on family involvement, tagging for research purposes, social interaction between members, and regular club activities to ensure our members enjoy their association with the club.

Our club fishes all aspects of Sportfishing, from Freshwater rivers and impoundments, to Estuarine and Blue Water Sport and Game Fishing. Our members are also active in the Sportfish Tagging Programme conducted by ANSA Qld Branch Inc.

We run three major events throughout the year, with our Interclub Competition being held in February each year, our Long Tail Tuna Fly Fishing Challenge in May.  Additionally, we hold a monthly rally weekend, which is held on the third weekend of each month and is followed by a barbeque and weigh-in alternatively at Spinnaker Sound Marina, Bribie Island and along the foreshore at Scarborough. We encourage our members to attend and fish at other sportfishing club events and interclub competitions held throughout the year by other local ANSA clubs.

The Bribie Island Sportfishing Club has also encouraged our members to become involved in all aspects of our organisation.  There has been at least one member of the BISFC involved in the ANSA Qld Branch Inc state executive since 1985, when John Doohan became the ANSA Qld Inc Publicity Officer.  Currently, we have members of our club serving on the State Executive, and on the National Executive.  In addition our members are heavily involved in Sunfish, and John Doohan is the current Chairman of Sunfish Queensland.

Outings and trips conducted by the Bribie Island Sportfishing Club are always well attended and are conducted in a friendly and social manner. New members can be assured that our members are only too willing to help beginners get established in the field of sportfishing, and are always welcome.
