Yabbies At Acton A Story of Canberra 1913-1927 by Ruth Robinson (nee Brackenreg).

I am the daughter of one of these early couples, James Carrington and Helen Jane Brackenreg, and was born four and half years after they arrived in Canberra in March, 1913...My father was with the North-West Pastures Protection board at Narrabri NSW when appointed Inspector with the Lands and Survey Branch of the Department of Home Affairs headed by Charles Scrivener...His duties in 1913 related to the sub-division of leases. His first job however was the eradication of rabbits... One of the reasons for the rabbit problem was that the land owners knowing that the land was to be resumed, failed to destroy them and so the land was bare and brown. The site later occupied by the Hotel Canberra was a rabbit warren covering two acres...

There were only scattered farmhouse, so most of the early civil servants lived very uncomfortably in tents or in Queanbeyan. The bachelors lived in tents in front of the Bachelors’ Quarters. At this stage even the Administrator, David Miller, was living in a tent on land where the Residency (later the Commonwealth Club...)was to be built. My parents found accommodation first with the Sullivans at Springbank. They had a bedroom and a bagged-in end of the verandah for a dining room and Mother cooked at an open fire in the garden. They paid one pound a week rental. This was a temporary arrangement so that Mother could study the situation... The Brackenreg’s later moved into rooms in the Rectory and later in the Groom’s Quarters at Yarralumla before moving into 8 Liversidge St Acton.
