A.CT. --- History of the YWCAThe YWCA opened in Canberra in rooms in Civic Centre in 1929. One room was downstairs and the above on the next floor. The upstairs room was used for dancing. In 1932 the new brick building was erected on the corner of Mort and Alinga Streets and ten years later on 14 February, 1942 Leave House was opened. During the war years more than 18,400 women service women stayed at Leave House. One of the newspaper cuttings kept by the YWCA dated July 22, 1930 had the following to state about the new YWCA building: An immediate start is to be made with the building and it is expected that the first portion which will cost 6,000 pounds will be completed by February, 1931. Comprising two main sections the exterior of the club rooms which will be of brick, with pressed cement caps and bases, is designed to convey an impression of homeliness and dignity. The entrance porches facing both streets, are of striking design. Panelled maple doors will be surmounted by lead lights and the enamelled blue triangle bade of the Association. On either side will be two pilasters flanked by brick work. The ground floor of the building proper contains two large club rooms, secretary's room, cloak room and kitchenette, while a basement includes a bath and cloak room facilities. A large gym is attached to the main building. Mr Kenneth Oliphant is the architect, and the building contract has been let to Mr Spendlove. The core of the Y's activities were designed specifically for women and included classes in arts and crafts. Another newspaper cutting dated July 17, 1930 gives some indication of the breadth of the classes carried out by the Young Women's Christian Association - YWCA. Many changes come in Canberra and the YWCA has its regrets and rearrangements. Miss Betty Rose will leave the city for Melbourne shortly and her dancing classes will be taken over by Miss Tovell of Minnie Room and rhythmic dancing classes for adults will be book up at once. Miss Heather George was farewelled at the Members' Meeting on Monday with appreciation of her artistry. Her exhibition has drawn many admirers; it will remain open until next Monday. Drawing classes for men and girls as well as children, are booking up for teaching by Mrs Whitlam, who will also teach modelling leather work, lino cuts, raffia, poker work, etc. Mrs Miles and Mrs Kellaway, pupils of Mrs Whitlam, have offered to go to the Jason, Dinkum and Gumnut Clubs to teach sealing wax work and raffia work. The YWCA is rejoicing that these star pupils are willing to pass on their knowledge in this way. A membership committee has been formed consisting of Mesdames Hunter, Weeks and Shoebridge, who will take charge of an keep in order the membership roll, advise the programme of members meetings, and try to plan so that no member is without interest in some of the many groups. This will soon make for the efficiency of the Association. There was a record attendant at the members' meeting on Monday and the playlet produced by the Rev Eric Owen in which members of the Dramatic Club appeared for the first time, was greatly appreciated. Saturday next is an invitation night to members and friends to see a more ambiguous play put on. It will be in Shakespearean style in that the audience is asked to use their imagination for the scenery and staging, that is to be their contribution to the entertainment. Last evening the Jason club held its first party at Molonglo. It was a happy evening, being very creditable to the young club officers and leaders. It is not everyone who can make a party of girls only such a delightful affair. They will not always shut out the menfolk we are sure. The Dinkums and Gum-Nuts are making themselves felt in their own neighbourhoods as well as on the play... Daphne Cashmore, who now lives in O'Connor and whose family moved from Russell Hill to the farm at the corner of Jerrabomberra Avenue & Hindmarsh Drive was along with her mother, Mrs Davies, a keen member of the YWCA. Her mother ran the Cut and Fit Classes. The garment was cut on the first night and fitted on the second. Daphne also recalled that it had been the original intention of the YWCA to add an accommodation section which like the original building was to be of brick. Leave House constructed from timber, replaced this original grand idea. Mrs Jean Whitlam who took the art classes was a trained art person and during the thirties Mrs Tillyard was on the board and Mrs Tapley-Short was the Principle. In the early Post World War II years the YWCA supported many of the New Australian women. The YWCA also sponsored the newcomers Art Craft Exhibition and Concert held at the Albert Hall on 30 May, 1949. Seven hundred attended the concert which included folk dancing and fifteen hundred visited the exhibition. Reference was made in the newspaper to beautifully tooled leather handbags made at Capitol Hill Hostel...in the Estonian Section...Exquisite needlework in traditional patterns was a feature of the Ukrainian exhibition... Work of carver, Mr W Kasprzak, who has been commissioned to make a wireless cover for Parliament House... Sport played and important part of the Y curriculum. They included, hockey, swimming, vigero, tennis, basketball and cricket. A newspaper article in 1934 states: With the revival of interest in women's cricket in Canberra this year the work of organising is proceeding satisfactorily. The governing body is called "The Blue Triangle Cricket Association" - the name being taken from the emblem of the Women's Christian Temperance Association which has taken a leading part in bringing about this revival. The popular energetic secretary of the YWCA, Miss Tapley Short, occupies the position of president of the Association and is also the treasurer. Miss Florrie Noble is the vice-president and the duties of secretary are carried out by Mrs Edwards. The Association meets at intervals and has the use of the Lady Hopetoun Room at the YWCA headquarters for that purpose. So far five clubs are in affiliation and it is expected that the number will increase as girls who are interested become more familiar with the rules of the game and tell their friends of its fascination. The clubs taking part in the competition are Hall, Westlake, Westridge, Church of England Girls Grammar School and the YWCA. The Hall team draws its players from the Hall district and Westlake also has sufficiency of players for its needs resident in that centre. This is not quite the case with Westridge, three players living in Queanbeyan coming to the aid of the club to make up the full complement of players. The Church of England Girls Grammar School team is drawn from scholars of that school, and the YWCA team comprises members of that association, although a number of these are resident at Duntroon. The office bearers appointed by the clubs are: Westlake Vice-Captain, Mrs Hawke, Secretary, Mrs Edwards. Westridge, Captain, Mrs Corey, Vice-Captain, Miss Blundell, Secretary, Miss Florrie Noble. CEGGS: Captain Miss Joan Garnett. YWCA Captain, Miss C Kaye, Vice-Captain, Miss L Martin, Secretary, Miss L Coulon. Westlake Team: Mrs Hawke, Mrs Armstrong, Miss F Robinson, Miss E Leech, Miss I Bellchambers, Miss M McKissock, Miss J Farrell, Miss L Edwards, Miss A Macdonald, Miss B Knight, Miss A Hawke, Mrs Corey, Mrs Edwards. Westridge Team Mesdames McArthur, Moore, Russell, Oldfield, Corey, Misses R Connelly, F Noble, J Noble, H Connelly, P Locke, R Johnson, L Blundell, M Brill, J Reidy. CEGGS: Misses Joan Garnett, Marjorie Moore, Norma Jardin, Eleanor Wildash, Joan Thomas, Angelo Thomas, Freda Louttit, Alvie Ryals, Nola Chandler, Joan Parker, Joan Liddle, Marie Robinson. YWCA Misses C Kaye, L Martin, L Coulon, G Coulon, M Beale, U Harris, J Hutchinson, B Dixon, D Ryan, R Rowley, J Alder, P Hellier, M Gardiner, A Kumnick, E Long, J Pettifer. Fortunately each of the clubs has its own playing area and the pitches are uniformly cement. The Westridge Club uses the Westridge ground while Westlake are at home on a ground the pitch was put down many years ago but is still in a playable condition. The Church of England Girls Grammar School Club uses the ground near the school. This ground was once occupied by the Red Hill Camp Team which passed out of existence some five or six years ago. The ample playing space of the Acton Flats provides for the YWCA and Hall uses a ground in close proximity to the township... By 1934 a number of venues were used by the Y including the Causeway Hall. This club took over from the Lady Hopetoun Club which looked after the interests of the lower classes of young girls requiring accommodation in the mid to late 1920s. The following are from YWCA archival documents held in Canberra and were handwritten in an exercise book. Following years' membership names were also written in the book but were covered by glued in articles from newspapers etc. Atkins, Mrs TW, Doonkuna St, Braddon Archer, Mrs E, Molonglo Allen, Prof & Mrs, Duntroon Asplin, Dr, Hotel Acton Alcorn, Dr & Mrs, National Circuit, Forrest Avery, Mr & Mrs JGG, Reid Amond, Mr WA, Kennedy St, Kingston Alexander, Mrs EC, Grimes St, Braddon Ashtown, Mrs JS, Grimes St, Braddon Allbright, Mrs DE Dirrawan Gdns, Reid Alexander, Mrs S, Elimatta St, Braddon Adams, Mrs TL, Grevillia, Waratah Parkway, Kingston Annand, Mrs PK, Batman St, Reid Adamson, TL, Waratah Parkway, Kingston Adamson, Mrs WM, Jardine St, Kingston Ambrose, The Misses, Cunningham St, Kingston Allan, Mr Frank, 82 Paterson St, Ainslie Anthony, Mrs R, Hotel Wellington Aubrey, Mrs D, Commercial bank, City Adam, Mrs HJ, Civic Centre Allen, Mrs JB, Civic Centre Abbott, Mrs E, Dominion Circuit Briggs, Mrs SJ, Batman St, Braddon Briton, Mrs R, Stuart View, Gosse St, Kingston Burr, Mrs CF, Ralph Darling St, Barton Barron, Mr & Mrs, East Row, Braddon Brownelss, Mrs WS, Forrest Bolle, Mrs A, Dampier Avenue, Forrest Butters, Sir John & Lady, Canberra House Behan, Mrs HG, Rouse Cresm Forrest Boniwell, Mr & Mrs M, Mugga Way Brackenreg, Mr & Mrs JC, Red Hill Bishop, Mrs FC, Toms Cres, Braddon Binns, Mr & Mrs, Mugga Way, Forrest Busten, Misses, Civic Centre, Ainslie School Beck, Mr SH, Hotel Acton Bruce, Mr & Mrs (Dr Sweet) RMC Borrowman, Mrs JR, Goreen St, Braddon Banks, Mrs J, Cox St, Ainslie Bateson, Mrs A, Russell Hill Bain, Mrs AJ, Halloween, Elimatta St, Reid Bloye, Mrs FE, Braddon Buckler, Mrs WJP, Braddon Berecry, Mrs D, Tharwa Beilby, Mrs H, Euree St, Reid Casey, Mrs L, Torrens St, Braddon Cochrane, Miss EM, Canberra Times Crapp, Mr, Mrs & Miss, Howett St, Kingston Curtis, Miss c/o Mrs Sommerville Crawley, Mrs LF, Currong St, Reid Currie, Mr & Mrs, Euree St, Reid Curey, Miss (Jarvis?)
