. The foremost difficulty in transcribing shipping records is the spelling of names: This particular index was created from the Clearence Ledgers of the Hobart port officer. When a ship was to depart Hobart, the Mate handed a list of the crew and passenger's name to the Port Officer, who after inspecting the vessel would give a certificate of clearance to the Mate. The Officer would then enter the names in a ledger detailing crew,passengers, ship's owners, tonnage, master and destination, and sailing date. Obviously, there is always room for error in the spelling of the names: for instance, either the Mate or the Port Officer might have made an error.The language barrier could also possibly offer difficulties in interpretation to the port officer (many Lascars, Asiatics, Tindals, Sepoys, etc were on these vessels): the literacy of the Mate or the Port Officer could also effect the spelling of name.
The biggest difficulty is the handwriting of the port officer: at times it is nearly illegible.
So in all instances a liberal view should be used when searching for a name: (eg: Burleigh might appear as Burley, Berli, Berliegh, Barleigh etc).
Those Single names below are usually those of Lascars, Asiatics, South Sea Islanders etc.(It is common to find they are given nicknames such as 'Sheik' etc.
Clearances were not usually issued to small tonnage vessels trading around Hobart ports. The majority of these vessels were bound for Sydney, Mauritius, England etc.
Ex-Convict's are usually noted as is the year of their issue of Certificate of Freedom, as Tasmania was then little more than an island gaol, and it was an offence to convey convicts out of the colony.
