Ejectment Books

What are the Ejectment Books?
They are a summary record of ejectment cases before the Irish circuit court.

What information do the Ejectment Books contain?
each book records the names of hundreds of evicted tenants, numerous landlords and their attorneys, locations of farms and details of leases.

Are the records Indexed?
The Ejectment books are sorted by COUNTY and then YEAR. There is NO surname or Parish Index.

How do I find the records ?
There are two sources.

1.Index of each County
2.The Records themselves.

1 = a complete list of each county's Ejectment Books can be obtained from the County Indexes of the Circuit Court, which are on open shelves at the National Archives, Bishop St, Dublin.
2 = actual records are held at the Four Courts, [and need to be ordered a day in advance]

Why where the records created?
In order to legally evict tenants, landlord had to receive a judgement in their favour at a session of the Circuit Court.

How Many Counties are represented ?
This still being determined but at this stage, the following years are known and how many of each year survives is also still being determined.

Carlow - 1867 - 1910
Clare - 1816 - 1914
Galway, 1840,1849,1856-57, 1886 - 1902
Kildare 1870 - 1931
Kilkenny 1847 - 49,1878, 1880-1963
Monaghan 1877 - 1940
Sligo 1867 - 1956
Waterford 1878-89, 1896 - 1955
Northern Ireland. uncertain.
The remaing counties have ejectment books that start 1883 - 1893
Some Counties refer you to the Civil Bill Books.
