George Henry Gallagher, born 16.10.1831 in the town of St Heliers, Jersey , Channel Islands,
son of Andrew Gallagher and Mary Madden
George had known siblings, Selina [Mrs Dorey],Mary [unm] and Elizabeth [Mrs Tuckett] - may have been married to a Brazier

During the 19th century Jersey enjoyed a boom trade in the ship building industry. The island depended on sea trade and shipbuilding and associated industries for its livelihood, so it is logical that George Gallagher became a seaman.
It was whilst working aboard the fully rigged, 530 ton 'Hannah', purchased and owned by the Rutledge Syndicate of Port Fairy, and due to operate as a trader between Belfast and London, that George Gallagher, along with several other ship mates, deserted ship, refusing to go back to work as they stated that that they where exposed to terrible work conditions. The men where subsequently arrested and ordered to return to work under the care of the ship's Captain - Fred Sweetman.

A short time later,George and two other men, James Young and Brian Peck, again deserted ship, slipping overboard and swimming the treacherous waters from outside Port Fairy, and landing near Mills' Reef between Port Fairy and Killarney.[In Victoria]

The men found employment under the care of Joseph Hammond, a local innkeeper and also substantial land owner, and Hammond shifted the men around his farms, whilst the police did their work to find the men.
After finding out the whereabouts of the deserted sailors, the police came to Hammond's farm to arrest them, taking into custody Gallagher and Young, but George was freed by several of Hammond's workers.
The police took Young into custody, and returned with a warrant for Gallagher and Peck's arrest, after meeting with Hammond at the Towerhill Inn,they asked the whereabouts of the deserters to which Hammond replied that they where on his farm working.
The police called upon Hammond in the Queens name to give the men up, to which Hammond replied

" You may get killed, and I will not say one word to save you, I will you see damned before I will tell you where the men are, and my men are as good as your men, and are bigger than your men, and you are to pay no more nightly visits, or you had better look out, as you will not get off as easily as last time"

Hammond was subsequently summoned and charged with harboring and employing the men. He was fined 15 pounds with 12 shillings costs. A charge for abusive language and abusing a constable was withdrawn. Peck was sentenced to hard labour, and 12 weeks in the Geelong Gaol. Young, it being his second offence, was sented to hard labour and 6 months in the Geelong Gaol. George Gallagher escaped being detained.

George Gallagher married Hanora Dwyer on the 29th April 1858 at Port Fairy. Hanora was the daughter of James {O}Dwyer and Ann McCarth [Carty]. She had been born in Bansha, in Co Tipperary and had arrived per 'Victory', with the majority her family in 1857.

George and Hanora had 14 children and spent most of their life at Killarney, with a brief period of time spent working at Borum Borum / Penshurst. One family oral story details that George was at the gold field when a man he was working with,by the name of Long Bill, had his throat cut, and George had to clear out to save himself from the same fate.

George worked in various occupations as laborer, quarryman, and fisherman, and was well respected for his knowledge of all things connected with the sea, and was often called upon to chair meetings at the local political meetings,as he had been educated and could read well. He was often called upon by neighbors to read their mail.

George and Hanora Gallagher are buried at the Towerhill Cemetery.
