GEELONG AND PORTLAND BAY, Emigration (Immigration)Society (including Port Fairy) 1845 - 1846. Index of Migrants compiled and presented by Jenny Fawcett
The following list of names were migrants from Tasmania, who were brought to Victoria by the Geelong,Portland Bay (& Port Fairy) Emigration Society.They arrived between 1845 and 1846 per the vessel's David, Scotia, Julia, Platina, and Shamrock. (it is not a comprehensive list of all migrants brought over from Tasmania by the Society.the Bellerine Historical Society holds records of other voyages in 1845) and other schemes can be found. (goto)Migration Schemes The migrants in 1845 and 1846 were brought over to Victoria by the Geelong and Portland Bay Immigration Society (including Port Fairy). The society was formed by the likes of squatters and merchants along the southern seaboard and into the hinterlands of the ports of Portland Bay, Port Fairy, and Geelong.There will be a full report available shortly on the Society, but in short: The Society was formed because of continued concerns about the lack of availability of a labour force. Subscriptions were sent by the Society to squatters,land owners & etc throughout Port Phillip and requested them to join the society for which they paid an an amount of money.The money was paid into a bank account,the amounts pooled and used to fund the passages for labouring men from Tasmania. (Some women and children were also to come). The treasurer and secretary (James Wallace of Geelong)then communicated with a committee in Tasmania who were out spreading the word that free passage would be paid to those who wanted to go to work over at Port Phillip. Free passage, (and for some,rations and wages). There were hiccups and delays, the cream of the excess labour workforce had emigrated shortly beforehand to TwoFold bay, and it was hard work gathering quality migrants. As many of the men came in from the countrysie of Tasmania, if the boats were not ready when they came into town then they would be more likely to return to the country for work, as they were generally without any means to sustain living in town till the boats were ready.Agreements were struck with Ship's owners and masters, in regard to passage fees (usually 20/- per head per migrant) and they were conveyed from Tasmania (large contingent from Hobart) to Port Phillip. Subcribers included the likes of the Manifolds, Learmounths, Connolly and Griffiths (Port Fairy), William Rutledge & Co, Sprot, Campbells,Roadknight and other landed gentry. (a list of subscribers will be shortly available) The Geelong and Portland Immigration Scheme is just one of many such schemes which operted over the years in colonial Australia. There has been no extensive study done in regard to what became of the migrants who journeyed over. It is likely that many returned to Tasmania if they were not happy with conditions in Victoria. It may be found that some went over in 1845, returned, and then re-applied in 1846. There are many possibilities in regard to the eventual outcome for the migrants. IT can be noted that a greater majority of the migrants were ex-convicts. The agent in Hobart commented that the search for quality exiles was difficult, so many having already emigrated. Below is a list of the names of those men,women and children who were listed to be brought to Port Phillip aboard the vessels charted by the Geelong and Portland Bay Immigration Society (including Port Fairy) and it needs to be said that there would probably be instances were people are listed but did not embark. The beauty of the available information in the records is that they record a migrant's FORMER ship to the colony (eg .if they were a convict per Ratcliffe to Tasmania in 1833,, it will generally be recorded on these lists). The lists also tell you the name of the vessel they came from Tasmania to Port Phillip under the auspices of the Society. The immigrants to Port Fairy and Portland were first conveyed to Geelong.
