Tipperary Big Houses

The following information is a sample of the information about
The Big Houses of Tipperary c 1850.

The list's origins are from an excellent book titled,
"Tipperary,History and Society"
by W.Nolan and T.G.McGrath.
The book gives a background on the society and events in Co Tipperary

Such lists can serve the genealogist in their research on the backgrounds of their family members, and the areas that they come where living in.
It can be a guide to events, people, places and possible employers.
It may be a source of information about a place or area that a family came from.
e.g- how big was the property? what would it need to be maintained? was there fences to mend, drainage requiring laborers?- crops?tenants? - carters for haulage?
servants to the house - groom, maid, herdsman, gardener,? windows to fixed - grazier?
Roofs to mend - walls to paint?

another example
-Corville House is in the townland of Corville, and the Baroney of Ikerrin.
It is approx.1 mile south of Roscrea and there is a cemetery nearby,
-does the cemetery still exist or is it known of?
Would there be records of the headstone's or burials?
Where could they be held?

We known that this big house it is in the townland of Corville -
so the researcher needs to know -
who was governing that Townland,Halftownland,Common,Glebe,Village,Mill,Quarry.?
Civil,Religous,Government, -
all possible sources of information regarding a place or parish or baroney
Also - did the parish and or townland, halftownland etc,
ever lay under the jurisdiction of another?

Also - in the case of Coleville -
we know that it was leased by Messrs Birch to the Hon.Francis Prittie.
Who where they? How did they become owners of the land ?
Did they lease to smaller tenants? if so -
what manner of agreementwhere the leases?
[eg - around Killarney - in Australia - in the 1850's,the tenants
of Wm Rutledge had their renewals of leases usually around the months
April/July of each year -but they where not necessarily annual -
some tenants had life leases.]
It didn't pay the landlord to have too short a lease on his farms as the
tenants wouldn't put their best effort into improving and caring for same.
Also tenants wanted some security in knowing the amount of time they could
lease a farm..particularly if there was family to provide and care for.
If a landlord fell on hard times and could not meet his commitment
to his lessor - what happened? Did he call up the rents on the tenants who
where leasing? What if they couldn't pay {thithes} and what if they
wouldn't leave? Was there a court that they could appeal to over jurisdictional matters?

When the big house was built - what sort of artisians and laborers
would be needed? - Did any stay on after completion - especially if
they married into the local families? How long would it take to complete
such a project as a castle etc.

What of police business? the majority of crimes that are happening today -
was happening back in early days also.So where and how were they charged?
and by whom - police/troopers? where was the gaols -
and who run them?

What if there was land dispute on boundaries? Where would this be settled?

What about schooling? where there any nearby?
State or Denomination funded and conducted?

I recommend that the researcher reads as much history ofan area that they are interested
in as may be available to gain insight into the social conditions
that may have affected their family, and that may have contributed to
choices that governed their behaviour/living arrangments, employment, schooling etc..

It is always my personal recommendation that any information should be authenticated.
