John Sheedy McNamara. 40th Regt.
Preface by Jenny Fawcett
On the website of B & M Chapman is a list of soldiers of the 40th Regiment who
performed a tour of duty in New South Wales 1823 - 1829. Amongst those named is a
John Sheedy McNamara.Care needs to be taken when researching this man that he is not
confused with John Sheedy McNamara, convict per Isabella, 1823 who was transported
as a political offender from Ireland.
The Public Record Office in Kew, London hosts a collection of soldier's records, which
includes a reference to:
John Sheedy McNamara, born Clare Abbey,Clare.
Served 40th Foot Regiment.
Discharged aged 39 (1820-1841.)

This will most likely be the same John Sheedy McNamara who served in New South Wales,
so from the two sources we know that John was born in (probably) the 1790's at
Clare Abbey, Co Clare, that he served in the 40th Foot and was discharged between
1820 and 1841.
