Michael Sheedy and Hanora Farrell
Preface by Jenny Fawcett
Litte is known as yet on Michael's history prior to and
including his arrival to Australia.
In the 1860's he was at Allansford, near Warrnambool,Victoria,
and by the 1870's he had purchased land at Crossley, Towerhill
between Port Fairy and Warrnambool, and west of Koroit.
Michael and his son Matthew Sheedy were each farming
c5 acres each on what was formerly Steven's Kangaroo Flat
Farm, and directly opposite Michael Sheedy's property was
that of Richard Scott, son of George Scott and Margaret
Sheedy.
Richard Scott was known to be in Geelong in the 1840's,he
had a brother George Scott there, and after the death of
George Scott, the latter's wife came to Port Fairy and upon
her death she was buried in the Port Fairy cemetery.
George Scott was well known in Melbourne and Geelong, and
at one time employed Patrick Sheedy
who came in 1841 per Neptune. Patrick was from
Co Clare, as was Michael and Matthew Sheedy, so there
may be tenous links between these families.
Patrick Sheedy per Neptune married Bridget Ryan
and they ended up at Piggoreet, near Ballarat. Margaret Sheedy
who married Patrick Geary also ended up Piggoreet after
seperating from her husband Pat Geary when he murdered a
shepherd at Colac in the 1850's. Also at Colac was
Thomas Sheedy and William Sheedysons of
Timothy Sheedy and Ellen Brown.
Matthew Sheedy, son of Michael Sheedy, also moved eventually
to the Colac region.
When Michael Sheedy died in 1895, his details on his death
certificate were filled in by a hospital staff member who
knew little about Michael. He was not aware he was married
and that he had children. We do know that Michael was Matthew's
father and I have newspaper accounts of the land transactions
whereby the two sold their properties and it states quite clearly
that Michael Sheedy was the father of Matthew. At the time
of his death, Michael Sheedy's usual residence was at Yangery,
to the east of Tower hill, near Warrnambool.
Michael had been placed in the Warrnambool hospital since 1891.
