A brief account of the formation of the Victorian Royal Rifle Corps in 1854 as published in the Melbourne newspaper titled the Argus and republished in the Warrnambool newspaper titled the Examiner on the April 8th 1854.

Victoria Royal Rifle Corps - A corps with the above title is now
in the course of formation in Melbourne. It is proposed that it 
shall consist of six companies of thirty file, i.e,six divisions,
and a total of three hundred and sixty men.
Five feet eight inches is to be the standard for the height of the
men. None under that height will be allowed to join.
Each division with a commander will be organized as follows;- One
captain, two lieutenants, two sergeants, and two corporals to each
division.
The dress is to be rifte [rifle?] green with scarlet facings gold lace, 
and black belt.
The rifles are to be accompanied by bayonets or swords.
The head dress is to be a glazed upright cap with black balls.
The officers are to wewar green plumer.
A great number of respectable gentlemen have already joined the 
corps, and in a short time a meeting of its members will be called,
after which an application will be made to the Government for
enrolment.
