RESEARCH NOTE Responsibility for Aboriginal Affairs began in 1838 with the creation of the Office of the Chief Protector of Aborigines under the Land Branch, Superintendent of Port Phillip District (entry 3.6.2). With the abolition of the Office of the Chief Protector of Aborigines a succession of agencies undertook the function within the jurisdiction of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey until 1968 when the Ministry for Aboriginal Affairs was created (entry 16.5.0). This Ministry was abolished in 1975. Former Administration came under the Depts: CHIEF PROTECTOR OF ABORIGINES 1838-1849 [VA 512] GUARDIAN OF ABORIGINES 1850-1860 [VA 513] CENTRAL BOARD APPOINTED TO WATCH OVER THE INTERESTS OF ABORIGINES 1860-1869 CENTRAL BOARD FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE ABORIGINES 1869-1957 ABORIGINES WELFARE BOARD 1957-1968 MINISTRY FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS 1968-1975 3.1.1 ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS UNIT c.1983-1985 The Aboriginal Affairs Unit co-ordinates the activities of government departments and agencies in relation to projects and activities affecting aborigines and advises the responsible Minister on issues relating to aborigines. In the administrative re-organisationof 1985 the responsibility for Aboriginal Affairs was transferred from the Premier to the Minister for Planning & Environment. Consequently the Aboriginal Affairs Unit was moved from the Department of Premier and Cabinet to the Office of the Deputy Secretary forPlanning of the Department of Planning and Environment. 16.5.0 CHIEF PROTECTOR OF ABORIGINES 1838-1849 [VA 512] GUARDIAN OF ABORIGINES 1850-1860 [VA 513] CENTRAL BOARD APPOINTED TO WATCH OVER THE INTERESTS OF ABORIGINES 1860-1869 CENTRAL BOARD FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE ABORIGINES 1869-1957 ABORIGINES WELFARE BOARD 1957-1968 MINISTRY FOR ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS 1968-1975 : Copies of Correspondence Relating to the Establishment of the Aboriginal Protectorate 1838-1839 1 box Open LAV VPRS 4409 : Aboriginal Protectorate Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly and Annual Reports and Journal 1839-1849 4 boxes Open LAV VPRS 4410 : Microfilm Copy of Aboriginal Affairs Records 1839-1873 5 rolls Open LAV/BAL VPRS 4467 : Registered Inward Correspondence to the Superintendent of Port Phillip District Relating to Aboriginal Affairs 1839-1851 11 boxes Open LAV VPRS 10 : Aboriginal Protectorate Returns 1840-1849 8 boxes Open LAV VPRS 12 : Aboriginal Estrays c.1840-1860 1 box Open LAV VPRS 6760 : Sundry Register 1841-1850 1 volume Open LAV VPRS 25 : Unregistered Correspondence Relating to the Suspension of Charles Sievwright from the Office of Assistant Protector of Aborigines, Western District 1842 1 box Open LAV VPRS 4397 : Unregistered Correspondence Relating to the Dismissal of W.
