RESEARCH NOTE
Responsibility for Aboriginal Affairs began in
1838 with the creation of the Office of the
Chief Protector of Aborigines under the Land
Branch, Superintendent of Port Phillip District
(entry 3.6.2).
With the abolition of the Office of the Chief
Protector of Aborigines a succession of agencies
undertook the function within the jurisdiction
of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey until
1968 when the Ministry for Aboriginal Affairs was
created (entry 16.5.0).
This Ministry was abolished in 1975.

3.1.1 ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS UNIT c.1983-1985
The Aboriginal Affairs Unit co-ordinates the
activities of government departments and agencies
in relation to projects and activities affecting
aborigines and advises the responsible Minister
on issues relating to aborigines.
In the administrative re-organisationof 1985
the responsibility for Aboriginal Affairs was transferred
from the Premier to the Minister for Planning & Environment.
Consequently the Aboriginal Affairs Unit was moved from the
Department of Premier and Cabinet to the Office of the Deputy
Secretary forPlanning of the Department of Planning
and Environment.
