History
Norah arrived in Melbourne, with her brother Patrick aboard the
Neptune, on the 29th Dec 1841. The vessel had departed
Plymouth, the immigrants being sent out under the auspices of
Mr John Marshall, of London, and £19 was the bounty paid.
Norah was a native of Co Clare, was 23yo and a housemaid by trade,
she could neither read nor write, and
Patrick stated he was 22 years old, a native of Co Clare, and
a labourer who could read and write.
When Norah's nephew Michael Sheedy [son of Pat] drowned in 1857,
an inquest was held, which included the following:-.
"..Inquest held on the body of Michael Sheedy, who on the
20th day of April..whilst fishing..drowned..in the Barwon River..
Thomas Bohanna, a householder..stated that the deceased Michael
Sheedy was his wifes's nephew..and that on the day concerned.one of
his children was with their cousins, the deceased and his brother..
and he [Bohanna] received word that an accident occurred and he
hastened to the place where the accidt occured..he retrieved the
body..and took same to the Retreat Inn [where the inquest was being held]..
Thomas Bohanna was running a boarding house in Ryrie Street,Geelong
in 1851 [source: Postal Directories] and his brother in law Pat
Sheedy was living Off Ryrie Street in this year.
Martin Traill (New Zealand)has kindly located at last, the death certificate
of Hanorah Bohanna, which has remained elusive until this time (2004).
Martin had contacted me in relation to the Salter/Bohanna branch of the
family, and when I mentioned that Hanorah's death remain unlocated, and that it
was now possible she was at New Zealand as her daughter Catherine was there, Martin
kindly located the death of Hanorah Sheedy in 1887. Hanorah died on the 3rd of June
at Dargaville (north of Auckland, on the Northern Wairoa River). Hanorah's son.
James Bohanna. was living there and Hanorah probably moved up to his residence after
spending time at her daughter Catherine's home at Port Chalmers.
James Bohanna was the informant on his mother's death certificate: he stated that
Hanorah had three surviving children: 2 males age 36 and 32 years respectively, and
in female age 41 years. This will be James, William and Catherine Bohannah.
James confirmed that his mother was married to Thomas Bohanna at Geelong (Victoria)
and he also recorded that she had been in New Zealand for eight years, which indicates
that Honorah moved over there from Geelong around 1879.(Her daughter Catherine had
been in New Zealand at least a dozen years prior to this). James also confirmed
that his mother was born in Co Clare, that her maiden name was Sheedy, and that
she was 70 years of age.
Hanorah's death certificate records that she died 'heart disease'.She was
buried on the 5th June 1887 at Mount Wesley, Denis Donovan and James McLean were
the witnesses to the burial.
