The vessel had departed Plymouth,the immigrants being sent out under the auspices of Mr John Marshall, of London, and Ł19 was the bounty paid. Norah Sheedy stated she was a native of Co Clare,was 23yo and a housemaid by trade, (she could neither read nor write), and Patrick stated he was 22 years old, a native of Co Clare, and a labourer who could read and write. Patrick may have worked in the Melbourne district at least until his marriage in 1846, his first child's birth is registered in 1847 in Melbourne,but the following year Patrick may have gone to Sydney for a short period of time, as when his son Michael died, Patrick, who was the informant, gave information that his son was born in Sydney, though we have his baptism in the Melbourne district, so the period spent in NSW must have been brief, & probably the child's baptism was recorded on their return home. Patrick remained in Melbourne until at least 1850,and may possibly be the same Patrick Sheedy who ran the Black Horse Inn,situate Elizabeth Street,Melbourne,[South Yarra] between the years 1848 and 1850, when after the latter date the publican,Pat Sheedy does not appear as the licencee of the hotel.It was also in 1850 that Patrick Sheedy [per Neptune] then moved to the Ashby/Geelong region, and records have been located which reveal that in 1851, a Patrick Sheedy who was working as a barman for George Scott, in Geelong, was involved in a court case whereby a young lady had been assaulted in connection with Patrick Sheedy being robbed. Patrick Sheedy [per Neptune] is recorded as being a resident "Off Ryrie Street Geelong"* in this year [and his brother in law, Thomas Bohanna ran a boarding house in Ryrie Street].* The girl,Polly [Mary Burns], was a "lady of ill repute" who worked in a house ran by a Mr James Green,situate in Limerick Place, and as she was last seen with the man suspected of robbing Sheedy, the latter, in company with George Scott, visited the business house of the girl, and she was shortly after found to be severely injured,which she attributed to having been done by Scott, and pressed charges against him.Both Scott and Sheedy denied any responsibility for her injuries, and yet neither could account for same which occured at the time they were visiting, though they did state that they heard a quarrel as they approached the house, and two men were seen leaving by the from door. Scott was remanded to appear in court,harged with assault,and it was adjuged to be worthy of a court trial.Scott's solicitor, in defense of Scott, stated that his character had been harmed by accounts in the newspapers, and he wanted all witnesses to appear to give their evidence. Polly Barnes very reluctant to appear as a witness, Pat Sheedy was also very reluctant to appear,the case created a lot of interest both in Geelong and Melbourne, where George Scott was well known,and after hearing all of the evidence in the Police Court, Scott was remanded with bail set.[and we are awaiting further research to determine the outcome of the case.It is interesting to note that the maiden of George Scott's mother was 'Sheehy', and George Scott's brother (Richard V Scott) lived near Port Fairy. George Scott's wife later moved to Port Fairy and is buried there. If this Patrick, involved in the court case is not Patrick Sheedy [per Neptune]who married Bridget Ryan, then there is a very good possibility that it is the Patrick Sheedy [per Ratcliffe] who escaped from Tasmania just prior to this time frame,[1851] and whose whereabouts remain a mystery until the event of the Eureka Stockade. If it was Pat Sheedy [per Ratcliffe,] he may not have wanted to become involved with the law as he was still a wanted absconder and had he been apprehended he would have been returned to Tasmania with extra sentencing added to his previous conviction of 15 years. I personally feel it may be Patrick [per Neptune] as he was known to be in the area,whilst no other Patrick was known to be at Geelong at this time frame, but I do remain open to the possibility of it being another man. The interesting thing about the George Scott involved in the court case is that he had a brother Richard Scott, who was the son of George Scott and Margaret Sheehy/Sheedy, who started off in Geelong, but soon made his way to Towerhill in the 1850's, where he owned an extensive tract of land which was for many years known as Scotts Corner, and is today known as Crossley. It was here at Crossley that Matthew Sheedy [eventually of Colac,] and his father Michael,[1805-1895] farmed two small allotments. In the 1870's Michael and Matthew sold up their allotments, and Matthew moved to Colac, and Michael may have remained in this area as he died in the Warrnambool Hospital in 1895, and his usual residence was Yangery which is the farming area only a few miles west of Crossly. To the south of Crossley, about three miles, is where Patrick Sheedy[per Ratcliffe] settled in 1855, after being released as prisoner taken at the Eureka Stockade Rebellion. In 1854, a Thomas Sheedy was the godparent of a child born at Towerhill [Crossley],the dau of a Thomas Berry and Catherine Fitzgerald. Hanora Scott, wife of George Scott [of Geelong] eventually also came to Port Fairy, and is buried in the cemetery there. In 1857, on the 20th April, an inquest was held on the body of Michael Sheedy,[son of Pat] who drowned whilst fishing in the Barwon River.Daniel Sheedy, brother of Michael, gave evidence which revealed that "..my brother and I went down to the river yesterday morning about 10 oclock to fish..our Father and Mother did not know we went ..we were often told not to go there. We went along the river..my brother got on a log and his hook and line happened to drop off the stick and he was stretching over to get it up when he fell off the log into the water..I as standing on the bank and brother was on the very end of the log when he fell off. He had the rod in his hand and I told him to stretch it out and I would catch it but he could not.I then ran home and told my mother,who came down with another woman.but we could not see my brother..so mother went off for some men..they got a boat and a dray and Mr Bohanna dragged him out..he was then dead.." one wonders what impact this scene had on the 9yo Daniel. Thomas Bohanna appeared as a witness to record that he had recovered the body of his nephew, and that he taken same to the Retreat Inn for an inquest to be held. In 1858 Patrick Sheedy was a witness at a trial for John FOGARTY at Geelong. Sheedy stated that he had gone to Fogarty's for a load of wood and had thus slept there for the night (to create an alibi for Fogarty). We are still waiting on the trial transcripts for a full account of the story. It is a possibility that Patrick [per Neptune]has some connection with the family of James Sheedy of Ohio [listed above].
