Margaret Sheedy and Bryan(t) (Bren)Cummins

Preface by Jenny Fawcett I gratefully acknowledge the kindness of Margaret Turner of Shepparton in making available the majority of the research for this family ,including that especially of Chris McCaghan of Leongatha,Andrew Phipps, Bryan (Brian) Cummins family appears to originate in Garrnamona in the Parish of Ballycahill. The civil parish of Ballycahill crosses two baronies - Eliogarty and Kilnamanagh Upper. There are townlands of Ballycahill in the counties Clare, Galway and Limerick in the parishes of Ballyvaghan, Prtumna and Kilmallock respectively, so it needs to borne in mind that the Cummins family were from the PARISH of Ballycahill, not a townland of that name. Margaret Cummins/Sheedy had at least three of her children christened at Ballycahill parish and the sponser on two occasions was a Catherine Sheedy (probably denating a family relationship eg sister/aunt/cousin). A Catherine Sheedy was also a sponser on the 14th of April 1836 in Ballycahill for the baptism of a Cath Cummins (dau of Thomas and Ellen Cummins) and in 1837 (April 14th) a Philip Kenedy and Catherine Sheedy were sponsers for the baptism of a Kitty Cummins (dau.of Thomas Cummins.Elenor Connell)...given that Philip Kenedy and Catherine Sheedy were also sponsers for the birth of Margeret Cummins/Sheedy dau Margt born 1837, they are probably one and same. Margaret is alledged to have a brother Dennis Sheedy, who married Mary Power, their daughter Mary born 25/6/1837. (not proven conc.) Margaret and Bren Cummins arrived in Melbourne, Victoria (Aust) in 1840 aboard the Theresa, also aboard was a John Sheedy (m Mary Fogarty) of the Newport/Killoscully region of Tipperary. John's relationship to Margaret, if any, has not yet been established, but Margaret and Brian (Bren) appear as sponsers for the baptisms of the children of John Sheedy/Mary Fogarty in Victoria, so it would appear a close family relationship. The Theresa departed England in March and arrived Port Phillip (Melbourne) in 1840. By 1857 Bren Cummins had an Inn on the Broadmeadows road.
