This is a brief history of the first generation of the Sheedy family from Ireland to Tasmania and Victoria,Australia .

Patrick Sheedy was born in 1815 in the townland of Oakhampton, in Co Tipperary.Ireland, the son of John Sheedy [Farmer] and Mary Bourke.

Pat Sheedy was arrested at OBriens Bridge [Birdhill] in 1845 for attempting to ambush a party of police at OBrien's Bridge. He was convicted and sentenced at Nenagh to a 15 year sentence to be served at Tasmania.
He arrived there per 'Ratcliffe' [2] in 1845, and first served twenty one months at the infamous Port Arthur settlement. After serving only five years, Pat escaped from Tasmania around June in 1851.
In Dec 1853 he was arrested at the Eureka Stockade Rebellion at Ballarat, Victoria, and was subsequently released due to lack of evidence against him being involved.

Pat married in June 1855 in the town of Warrnambool to Ellen OConnell, daughter of James OConnell and Margaret OHalloran of Cappahaleen in Co Clare.
Ellen, born in c 1833, and supposedly a niece or relative of the Great Daniel OConnell,had arrived in Victoria in 1854 aboard the 'Almora' and came by the 'Panama' from Portland to Port Fairy.
At the time of their marriage Patrick Sheedy was working for John Lynch at Towerhill and Ellen was working for Patrick Joyce of Towerhill.

Pat and Ellen settled in the area of Towerhill and Killarney, the latter becoming his home farm and was named Birdhill after his birthplace in Ireland.
Our great great grandparents had thirteen children, all raised at Killarney , descendants of whom are still in the district currently, Joan Williams residing on the original homestead.
