This index is to convicts mentioned in old newspapers in Tasmania (which was initially known as Van Diemens Land).
You can search the index using the alphabetical links above. Unless stated otherwise the reference is to a convict in Tasmania The index does include convicts in New South Wales.
.The news articles may refer to a convict being tried for a colonial offence, or being rewarded for meritous behavior, or simply before a Magistrate for drunkeness or for missing a Muster. General references will be to the granting of:-
		Ticket of Leave,  Conditional Pardon, Freedom Certificate, 
			Free Pardon	Promotion	    Transfer

CP	=Conditional Pardon
CA	=Convicts Eligible for Application for various Certificates
CF	=Certificate of Freedom
CT/CR	=Court Evidence or Trial
		[Often mentions loss of Ticket of Leave, further
	            convictions/sentence etc]

CS	=Colonial Sentence

FC	=Freedom Certificate
FP	=Free Pardon 	
		[usually given for exceptional behaviour]
FS	-Free by Servitude
		{Indicating a convict has served their sentence]
KP	=King's Pardon

QP	=Queens Birthday Pardon
		[these given on Queens Birthday]

PR	=Promotion to position such as Constable etc.
		{Often mentions which district etc}

SP	=Special=	Ticket given under Special Circumstances
		{EG.reward for capture of bushrangers,saving a life etc}
TR	=Transfer of Prisoner from One Employer to Another
		[generally states which employers]
TL	=Ticket of Leave
TLQ	=Ticket of Leave,Queens Birthday .
TLK	=Ticket of Leave.King's Pleasure
