The following list is some of words, terms and idioms that are used in my poetry and is part of Australia´s history and they may not make sense to the common layman. But! I can assure you that they are an important part of Australia's past.

Amalgam. The amalgamation of mercury and gold.
Aristotle's. Slang for large bottles of beer.

Aussie Rules. A football code played mainly in Melbourne AFL (The Australian Football League).
Anzacs. Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, WW1.

Back O´ Bourke. Far out west of the town of Bourke, Queensland Australia
Bakers and the Barns. 2 Australian sporting icons of the early 1900´s.
Ballarat. A large city in central Victoria famous for gold mining in the late 1800´s and early 1900´s.
Bardie Grub. A Witchidy Grub, a large fat white grub found in roots and are eaten alive or cooked (bush tucker)
Battery Box. The steel box of the battery where the gold bearing rock is crushed to size to liberate the gold.
Battery Sands. Residue of the rock crushed at a battery.
Battery Shoes. The steel plates placed in the bottom of the battery box for crushing rock.
Battery. A stamp mill used to crush gold bearing rock to liberate the gold.
Beak (A or The). A judge or magistrate. A Nose
Bent. Dishonoust.
Bickies in the Tin. Money in your pocket.
Big Black Coon. A Male Australian Aboriginal.
Biggles. An Australian Radio serial of the 1950´s and 60´s.
Billy Goat Hill. A hill that overlooks the Alice Springs Prison or it could be a hill anywhere.
Billabong (A). A waterhole situated close to a river (the mythical Bunyip lives in a Billabong)
Billy Tea. Tea made in a Billy.(see Billy).
Billy. A tin or can used to boil water over an open fire for making tea.
Billy singin´ its Song. The noise of water boiling in a Billy.
Binge. To drink alcohol to an excess.
Blacks. Australian Aboriginal.
Blackfella. An Australian Aboriginal.
Black Stump (The). Way out past beyond, past the never never.
Black Velvet (A bit of). A term used in the early 1900´s for Aboriginal women who give sexual favours.
Bleak. Dim, offering little or no hope; "the future looked bleak"; "prospects were bleak".
Bloomin'. A form of exclamation.
Block (To Do Ones). To get Angry With
Block (To do or loose your). To get angry and abusive.
Bloody. A term of exclamation, frustration, annoyance, disappointment, anger, endearment, etc.
Bloke or Blokes. A man, sometimes a male friend. A cordial reference to ones-self.
Blue Hills. An Australian Radio serial of the 1950´s and 60´s.
Bluey. A swag or bedroll carried by a swagman.
Bludge (To). To let some one else do all the work or to take something for nothing.
Bludger (A). A Lazy person or someone that uses others for they're own gain.
Bumper Crop. A more than average farming crop.
Bob. A shilling (10 cents) Australian pre-decimal coinage.
Boil ya´ Billy (To). Make a billy of tea.
Boiler (A or An old). Machinery used to generate steam power in the early part of this Century. An older woman who is not very attractive.
Bonzer. Something that´s real good, it´s ok, all right, a real good person.
Dooley´s shanty pub. A ramshackle shack that served as a hotel pre 1900.
Booze. Alcohol.
Booze (To get on the). To indulge in copious amounts of alcohol.
Bora Rings. An Australian Aboriginal place for ceremony and corrobee.
Bottler. Something that´s real good, it´s ok, all right, a real good person.
Bottle Stopper. A Policeman.
Boxin' Troupe. A group of people going from town to town entertaining people (a bit like a circus).
Braggin'. Showing-off or over estimating one's ability.
Brass Razoo. Nothing. Stone broke (I haven´t got a brass razoo).
Breaking In. To Tame.
Break a roo. Tame a kangaroo.
Break Dirt. To mine.
Brekky. Breakfast.
Brew. A cup of tea. An alcoholic concoction.
Brickie. A Bricklayer.
Broke. Without money.
Bronze Wings. A type of Australian bush Pigeon.
Broome. A country town on the coast in the north of Western Australia.
Brumby (A). A wild horse or mountain pony.
Brumby Mare (A). A wild horse or mountain pony.
Buckley´s. No hope or chance.
Buggered. Finished, no more, useless.
Buggery (To go to). Go to hell, get lost or piss off.
Bugger All. Nothing.
Bugger Off. To go away. Tell some one to go away.
Bugga´ Me(Well). An exclamation of surprise.
Bugle (To). To drink from a bottle.
To Bugle a Big brown bottle of beer. To drink from the bottle quickly.
Bullfinch. A small Gold Mining area in Western Australia.
Bumper´s. Cigarette butts.
Bundaberg or Bundy. The town of Bundaberg situated in Queensland Australia.
Bundy Rum. Bundaberg Rum, Rum made in Bundaberg Queensland Australia.
Bung. Broken, not in working order (Its gone bung)
Bungs It On (To). To pretend you are something you´re not.
Bungarra. A large goanna. (An Australian Lizard).
Bunyip. A mythical Australian creature believed to live in a Billabong.
Bunyip Flats. A mythical place the Australian Out Back.

Bushies. A person who prefers to live in unpopulated areas rather that a town or a city.
Bush Tucker. Eatable Food found growing in the bush.
Butted or Butt. Removed hindquarters of an animal for cooking.
By cripes. An exclamation.
By Crikey. An exclamation. It´s a good thing. Take note, listen to what I´m saying.
Cabolture. A town situated about 30ks north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
Camp. A home in the bush or to have a sleep.
Camp (Me orMy). Where I live in the bush.
Camp (Back to). A place where I stay.
Camp (To). To stay for the night or longer (com´on mate, roll out ya´ swag and camp the night).

Patchin' Holes. Repairing holes in a bitumen road.
Paynes Find. An old Gold mining area in central Western Australia.
Pegged. To mark out a mining claim.
Penny Weight. The measurement of gold before decimal conversion, 20 pennyweights = 1 ounce 31. 1 grams = 1 ounce.
Perth. The Capital city of Western Australia.
Petermann Range. A mountain range situated on the Western Australian/Northern Territory borders.
Pilbara. A Gold mining district in Western Australia.
Pilot Mine. Open cut mine situated in the Yilgarn Mineral Fields, Western Australia.
Piss. Slang for Alcohol.
Pissed (To get or to be). Drunk.
Piss off (To be). To be annoyed with.
Plates. Copper plates used to amalgamate gold with mercury.
Plonk. Cheap wine.
Pommies. An Englishman.
Point the Bone (To). The Australian Aboriginals believe that if they had the bone (A small bone from a kangaroo) pointed at them they would die, they mainly died from fear. The Elders of the tribe would point the bone in the direction of the offender and sing (To be Sung), the offender would then die. One theory of how the offender would die was that the offender was chased by the Jingi men until he or she passed out from exhausted then a very thin bone was inserted into the brain via the nose or ear leaving very little or no trace of blood (if there was any blood it would have been put down to the fall to the ground) also it would be nearly impossible to find the punture mark that caused the death of the offender.

Pots of Beer. A 15 onz glass of beer. (This may vary in each state of Australia).
Pouch. The female kangaroo carries its young around in its pouch from birth until 12 months old or more, the pouch is like a pocket situated on the lower front of the female kangaroo.
Prattle. To rave on about nothing.
Prospector (A). A person who searches for gemstones and/or precious metals.
P's and Q's. To mind your Manners.
Push (The). To move someone along, to move out of the way.
Queer's. A little bit on the odd side. A homosexual.
Quid. One Pound, denomination of Australian money used before decimal currency.
Queens Pleasure (The). To wait for a royal repeal.
Quince. To loose ones temper.
Queenslander. A house built for weather condition in Queensland, Australia.
Queensland Blues and Butternuts. Types of Pumpkins.
Queensland dog. A blue Healer.
Quandong Nuts. Nuts found growing in the Australian bush (Bush Tucker).
Quandong Tree. A Tree found growing in the Australian bush.
R600 Mack. A prime mover (truck).
Rabbit O. What a man who sells rabbits calls out. It is also what people say, "Here comes the Rabbit'O".
A seller of rabbits or the Rabbir'O had a horse drawn cart with rabbits that had been gutted hanging in pairs on the side of his cart and he'd go from house to house calling out "RABBIT'O RABBIT'O A DENA A PAIR" or sixpence depending on the price of the rabbits, the rabbits were usually sold in pairs because of the scarcity of meat on one rabbit.

Real Beaut. Real good, ok, all right.
Remlap Station. A cattle and sheep property in Western Australian.
Ridge Didge. Slang for Truth.
Ring the Shed (To). To shear the most sheep in a shearing shed.
Ringer. A cattle station worker.
Ripper. Real good, ok, all right, the best.
Road Train. A prime mover with two or more trailers.
Rockhampton. A large city situated on the central coast of Queensland, Australia.
Roebourne. A small town situated on the central coast of Western Australia.
Roo. Kangaroo.
Rot (to talk or a load of). To talk rubbish or to rave on about nothing.
Run a Banker. To Flood over the river banks.
Rung. The term use when a Shearer has sheared the most sheep at a shearing shed.
Salt and Pepper country. Areas of ground covered with ironstone and quartz scree.
Sandalwood Nuts. Nuts found growing in the Australian bush (Bush Tucker).
Sandalwood Tree. A Tree found growing in the Australian bush (used for making sandalwood incest).
Salvo´s. Salvation Army.
Septic Tank. Rhyming slant for a yank, an American.
Se´s. Says.
Screen. A screen placed in front of the Battery Box to let the fine crushed material (slightly smaller than beach sand) through to go over the plate's thence pumped into the tailings dam.
Scrub. Bush land or unpopulated areas in Australian.
A Scrubber. A steer that has gone feral and live in scrubby areas.
Scrubber (An old). Cattle that have gone feral and live in scrubby areas all their lives, or an old woman.
Scrubber Bullock. Cattle that have gone feral and live in scrubby areas.
Shakes (The). To shake from over indulgence of alcohol.
Shappin' Up. To take a boxers stance.
Shandies. Mix of Beer and Leomonade.
Shanty Shack. A roughly built shelter.
Shed. A shearing shed where Shearer´s shear sheep.
Sheoaks. A native tree that grows mainly along Australian waterways. According to old prospectors it is also a sign of mineralialsation .
Sheila or Sheila's. A lady, girl, women or a sook.
Singin' him. See Point the Bone.
Sixpence. Six pence (5 cents) Australian pre-decimal coinage.
Skewers. Darts.
Skite, or To Skite. To brag; to over estimate ones own ability.
Skulled (To Skull). Drink with out taking a breath. To drink very fast.
Shore Up/Timber Up. To timber up loose ground to stop the collapse of the collar of a mineshaft.
Shoot Through (To). To leave in a hurry.
Show. A mining lease where gold has been found.
