Bega is the unofficial capital of the Sapphire Coast, being the area's largest town and is home for the civic and commercial buildings in the Bega Valley Shire. Bega is a very picturesque town, nestled on the banks of the Bega River, set in the vast Bega Valley (too many Begas), and the town also marks where the Princes Highway meets the Snowy Mountains Highway. The town was first settled in the 1830's as a centre for the timber and dairy industries, and in recent times being famous for producing cheese. The town itself is well laid out, has an attractive, characteristic and colourful main street which has many old buildings still standing.
