Bulahdelah

Bulahdelah, a small town located on the Pacific Highway between Newcastle and Taree, lies at the western foot of Bulahdelah Mountain (locally known as Alum Mountain) and at the junction of the Myall and Crawford Rivers. Settled in the mid 1800's, the town became the centre for local agricultural and timber industries before alumite mining on Bulahdelah Mountain took place for 72 years until operations dwindled in 1950. Although serious attempts of re-vegetation on the mountain have occurred, the legacy of mining is still evident with much of the open cut mine still apparent to passers by. The town today remains a centre for the surrounding timber and dairying industries and although becoming a highway service centre in the past 20 years, construction on the Bulahdelah bypass of the Pacific Hwy has commenced which will ultimately have some effect on the local economy. Of interest in the area include the Myall Lake and Myall Lake National Park (20km east), The Great Lakes tourist drive (starts 3km north), the historic Bulahdelah Court house and walks on Bulahdelah Mountain.
