Cooma

Cooma is located at the junction of the Monaro and Snowy Mountains Highways, high up in the Snowy Mountains. It is the gateway to the NSW snow slopes, and obviously is very busy in the winter months, and administrative centre for the Snowy Moutains Hydro-Electirc scheme set up in the 1950's. The area around Cooma is well known for the flat expansive grassy plains, known as the Monaro (where the highway's name originated from), and the town appears as a mini oasis in the brown and treeless plains. In the area are many old buildings, the Kosciusko National Park, various lookouts and Llama world (19km away). The town is very attractive, with a colourful and warm main street, despite the cold settings.
