Katoomba
Katoomba is the main residential and commercial centre of the Blue
Mountains. It was originally developed for coal mining in the late 1800's,
however it soon attracted wealthy Sydney holiday makers. Even though the
coal mine is long disused now, the town has developed into a tourist destination.
In Katoomba lies the Three Sisters rock outcrop, Echo Point lookout, The
Giant Stairway (~900 steps), Katoomba Falls & Cascades, Scenic World
(comprising the Scenic Railway, Skyway and Sceniscender), Floodlit waterfalls
& cascades at night and various picturesque walks below and above the
Blue Mountains cliff faces. The main street unfortuantely is a let down
considering the rest of the town is extremely attractive.
