Lismore, located on the Bruxner Highway and along Wilsons River is a major
city in northern New South Wales, the commercial centre for the Northern Rivers
region and home to the Southern Cross University. Settlers reached the district
in the mid 1840's with timber cutting the original industry. Wilsons River was
used to float logs downstream from the logging camps to the the current site of
Lismore, where they were loaded onto ships that came upriver thus the city grew
quickly around the busy port. By the late 1800's, farmers were occupying the
surrounding areas with dairying, sugar, macadamias and bananas being the main
industries, to which Lismore became an important commercial centre.
Certainly a great spot to visit - much of the older city is located in a natural
sinkhole formed by Wilsons River with newer areas sprawling east across the
hills. The CBD is great - set against the river, the shopping precinct is busy
and substantial. Lismore, Spinks and Heritage parks are all within walking
distance to the city centre and being surrounded by hills, various scenic
vantage points can be easily reached.
