Nambucca Heads
Nambucca Heads, located just off the Pacific Highway between Kempsey and Coffs Harbour also lies at the mouth of the Nambucca River. Built up on the prominent Nambucca Headland, the town is unusually perched above the surrounding waterways and forests. Established in the late 1860's after logging had begun on the Nambucca River, the town grew around the local sawmill and dairying industries. Into the early 1900's crop growing was introduced into the area and after the railway arrived in the late 1920's, the town slowly became a popular holiday destination. Growth has occurred in recent times due to increased tourism and as a retirement location - consequently the town is emerging as a commercial centre for the surrounding region. Also in the area include: Stuarts Island (now a golf course), surrounding beaches (Forster, Valla & Beilbys), the Headland Historical Museum, Swiss Toymaker (5km north) and several waterfront walking tracks & parkland.
