Sturt Highway (NSW)

The Sturt Highway begins at the NSW/VIC border where the highway crosses the Murray River at Mildura. From there the highway heads east and passes through the fruit growing areas of Gol Gol and Euston before reaching Balranald. Continuing east, the highway crosses and follows the Murrumbidgee River, across the Hay Plains to Hay, Narrandera and eventually Wagga Wagga. From Wagga Wagga, the highway becomes undulating as it enters the Great Dividing Range where shortly after it joins with the Hume Highway. Motorists continuing to Sydney now have to follow the Hume Highway.

Name Origin:
The highway is named after Charles Sturt, the explorer and navigator who was the first to travel the Murray-Darling-Murrumbidgee River network from NSW to the Murray Mouth in South Australia. The highway's path follows a significant length of the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers.
