Name Origin: The highway is named after Charles
Sturt, the explorer and navigator who was the first to travel the
Murray-Darling-Murrumbidgee River network from NSW to the Murray Mouth in South
Australia. The highway's path follows a significant length of the Murray and
Murrumbidgee Rivers.
Pronunciation: Stert Highway
Start: NSW/VIC border (Mildura)
Principal Towns: Mildura (VIC),
Euston, Balranald,
Hay, Narrandera, Wagga
Wagga
Finish: Hume Highway (38km south-east of Gundagai)
Length: 598km
Road Standard: Bitumen.
Road Quality: Very flat with ample overtaking
opportunities. Overtaking
lanes only in the more undulating sections around Wagga Wagga. Bitumen
surface is very ordinary from Balranald-Narrandera, otherwise the road
is excellent.
Speed Limit (outside built up areas): 110km/hr Mildura-Collingullie,
100km/hr Collingullie-Hume Hwy
