Sydney, the capital city of New South Wales, the largest city and tourism mecca of Australia. Sydney is Australia's first city settled in 1788 by the First Fleet when they arrived in Botany Bay. It has grown from that day to an extremely busy city, a shopping and commerical haven in the CBD with seemingly endless suburbs sprawling north, south and west. The suburbs themselves are littered with character depending on their age. The CBD is an absolute mess. It is obvious there was little planning involved due to the un-parrallel and complicated nature of the streets and their complete narrowness forcing many to be in a one-way nature. The amount of shops and places to visit in inner Sydney are endless, with some of the best being the Centrepoint Tower (if you like an expensive view), the Powerhouse Museum, Darling Harbour, Sydney Monorail, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House, Circular Quay, Star City Casino, the QE Building and George Street. Sydney also boasts Bondi Beach, the Blue Mountains to the east, the Central Coast & Old Sydney Town to the north, Wonderland theme park, Taronga Zoo, superb scenery to the north, great all-round weather, excellent nightlife and many, many historic buildings. By far the city is the prettiest out of Australia's capitals, and most popular, as the results of the 2000 olympics suggested. When visiting I had the impression of never being able to see everything, and I must admit that is a strong point in that you could return many times without having to see the same things again. A definate holiday destination if you are out of ideas for other smaller or quiet locations.
