Tamworth, lies at the junction of the Oxley and New England Highways in
northern New South Wales is the commercial centre of the Peel Valley and one of
the state's key regional centres. It is commonly referred
to as the country music capital of Australia as each year in January, Tamworth hosts the Australasian
Country Music Awards which attracts thousands of visitors. Also in the area are the
giant golden guitar to the city's south, Lake Keepit - 50km west is a popular
water skiing and boating haven, the Power Station Museum, Oxley Marsupial
Reserve, various galleries and walks as well as the magnificent Oxley
Scenic Lookout which lies at the summit of the mountain directly behind
Tamworth.
The city centre is interesting - Peel Street has been recently upgraded
and is a shady shopping mecca, lined with various interesting buildings,
and the adjacent waterfront of the Peel River is well looked after.
